Seriously, Kerry picks 'Daily Show' (annoys old line)
Seriously, Kerry picks 'Daily Show' for interview
Senator's camp says show good way to reach young voters

By Lisa de Moraes

Updated: 4:52 p.m. ET Aug. 24, 2004

When John Kerry decided it was time to do his first national TV interview since the Swift boaters for Bush launched their attack on the senator's Vietnam War record, he did not choose CBS's "60 Minutes," ABC's "Nightline" or "NBC Nightly News."

...

"A lot of television viewers - more, quite frankly, than I'm comfortable with - get their news from the Comedy Channel on a program called 'The Daily Show,' " "Nightline" anchor Ted Koppel whined to his viewers in a telecast from the Democratic convention in Boston. (During that telecast, Stewart took issue with Koppel's comment, saying "Daily Show" fans watch "for comedic interpretation" of the news. "To be informed," Koppel replied, refusing to budge from his position. "They actually think they're coming closer to the truth with your show." Stewart shot back: "Now that's a different thing, that's credibility, that's a different animal.")

...

Earlier, before being clawed by Kerry's reps, we spoke to "Daily Show" executive producer Ben Karlin, a charming man who did not take offense at our questions and who promised that the Comedy Central program would try especially hard to resemble an actual TV news show tonight during its Kerry encounter.

"We're going to focus exclusively on events of 30 years or more ago . . . and not on anything relevant to anything beyond 1964," Karlin said.

1. did you hear Dobbs on Hannity&Colmes
he was whining Kerry wouldn't/hadn't agreed to an interview, and you could see in his eyes he was thinking of TDS.

5. The only people Koppel and his ilk have to blame
Edited on Tue Aug-24-04 09:10 PM by leftistagitator
is themselves. The media had their chance to do their job, and they failed. The Daily Show stepped in as the most credible news outlet because Jon Stewart has proven himself to have more journalistic integrety than all the other talking heads on TV combined. It's sad that this is the state of TV news, but it's not fair to blame Jon Stewart just because he never chose to be an RNC whore like they did.

8. Right on.
Jon Stewart neatly shot down the Swift Boat idiocy in about ten seconds last week, giving it exactly the treatment it deserved.

The rest of the "liberal" media, after featuring these idiots front and center for more than a week, spew a bunch of navel-gazing crap about how unfortunate it is that people are so focused on Vietnam rather than on the country's present issues. Call me crazy but maybe if they'd actually *cover* those issues instead of giving equal time to every single turd the Republican Noise Machine grunts out, the Daily Show wouldn't be ganking awards out from under their noses.

I'm a little apprehensive about how Kerry will fare on the show tonight, but I think it's great that he's going to do it.

13. You got that right
Last night, TDS had another 'gotcha' coup where they showed one of the lying swifites commending Kerry before a microphone in front of some group of people back in 1996.

The punchline?

Kerry was there, standing right next to him.

Why didn't a 'legitimate' news organization scoop TDS? Remember when terms like 'investigative journalism' were redundant?

36. exactly...
the first place I saw "...now, watch this drive" was on the Daily Show (probably Michael Moore saw it there first, as well). Lots of stuff in F911 had already been covered here, on TDS and on blogs like Bartcop so it was 'review' for me: not the same for most others in the audience.

...now, watch this drive,
Tut-tut

7. Only old people and political junkies watch Cable news.
The daily show is the best outlet For Kerry to connect with younger voters. The media whores have lied so bad and have been so rufe to Kerry that not One of them deserves an interview. Not Even Dobbs. Dobbs talks the jobs issue real good, he's a good talker, but he never says anything good about Sen Kerry.

29. You're right, exactly those (few) viewers -- I think cable's power...
comes from being part of determining what we have to call the "memes." The Beltway is political-junkie central, and gets its news 24/7, most likely from cable TV. Its an echo chamber, and its provincial perceptions become the "conventional wisdom." Stories flogged on cable have to be covered eventually by the print press. Soon, you have SBVT, for example, as the number one story in the nation, eclipsing all others.

Also, I think, older and political-junkie viewers are interested and motivated as voters and activists, so cable has an influence there.

Ordinary people sophisticated enough to want real news know to turn to "The Daily Show," the print press, or the net.

watches The Daily Show, and has gotten her octagenarian mother to watch it as well.

You young whippersnappers don't remember the Good Old Days when we didn't *need* TDS because reporters actually asked real questions of candidates. Well, at least occasionally.

25. Didn't John Edwards announce his run for presidency on TDS?
I seem to remember John Edwards being on the Daily Show the day before his official announcement so that Daily Show viewers could see it first. John Kerry should hit the Oprah Show as well, a lot of people see the show, trust her to be fair to democrats, and let's face it she promoted COSTCO ( the only one contributing to democrats) and Target, doesn't get into promoting the Wal-Mart type of businesses.

30. Yep, and Stewart commented on it last night...
... in his self-deprecating way, implying that Edwards was doomed to lose from that point. But Kerry swiftly corrected him, saying that Edwards had won... and that Edwards was going to win big come November!

It was great.

35. There's a whole SLEW...

The DailyShow, a couple of weeks ago, picked up on a story that nobody in the corporate media did.

Some MSNBC reporter caught Cheney in a glaring lie, saying that he had NEVER used some particular justification for invading Iraq. The second it was out of his mouth (the denial) I remembered seeing him on 'Meet the Press' saying exactly what it was he'd just denied.

The DS ran with it, and showed the MTP clip that night. They were the ONLY news outlet to do so.

Ironically, NBC failed to do so, and IT WAS THEIR BLOODY INTERVIEW.

Now, if you wonder why people get their news from Stewart, it's because he actually covers news, doesn't look like a corporate whore, and fears no politician.

34. It's sad that a comedy show has more brains than the news networks.
The grownups can't think. They just want to make their money. But the Daily Show has people who love to think; Have a real concern for the country; And aren't owned by huge corporations (although they are commercial).

They should all be ashamed. But still, it is not the media's fault.

Americans have been taught to not think, but to just absorb. Therein lies the problem.
