Kerry Wins Backing from Nobel Economics Laureates
as Kerry calls for ""jobs that don't just let you survive but let you get ahead. Jobs that let you pay your bills, send your kids to college, buy a house, save a little for retirement and go out to dinner or a movie every once in a while."

By Michael Conlon

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - John Kerry won the endorsement of 10 Nobel Prize-winning economists on Wednesday as he attacked President Bush for policies that he said have led to the creation of only low-paying jobs.

The Democratic presidential nominee released a letter from the economists saying the Bush administration had "embarked on a reckless and extreme course that endangers the long-term economic health of our nation."

They cited "poorly designed" tax cuts that instead of creating jobs have turned budget surpluses into enormous budget deficits, a "fiscal irresponsibility threatens the long-term economic security and prosperity of our nation."

The endorsement, in the form of an open letter American voters, was signed by George Akerlof and Daniel McFadden of the University of California at Berkeley, Kenneth Arrow and William Sharpe of Stanford University, Daniel Kahneman of Princeton University, Lawrence Klein of the University of Pennsylvania, Douglass North of Washington University, Paul Samuelson and Robert Solow of MIT and Joseph Stiglitz of Columbia University. <snip>

9. Of course not
Media won't touch true economics with a ten foot poll. (pun intended)

If it takes more than 10 seconds to explain, it's useless to them.

Anybody willing to sit still for a full discussion of economics is already voting for us.

10. Ubetcha! These schools are NOT bastions of 'leftist thought'
These are the cream of the crop in economics, and not at all 'wild-eyed liberal'.

3. Great article with potential to resonate- does Bushco dare smear them too
I love how Kerry and his campaign have come out so solidly and positively this week in the media as well as effectively exposing the RW smear tactics, compared to how Buscho had nothing besides leaked slimy stories about Berger and other Dems and terror alert fear tactics right before and after the Dem convention.

4. I guess my favorite names on the list are
William Sharpe (Sharpe's ratio)
and Daniel Kahneman (behavioral finance)

just because anybody with a CFA knows these names.

And everybody knows the name Paul Samuelson.

8. The implication
is that they have sold their integrity and lied to get Kerry elected. Once again, they ascribe their own sins to the opposition.

11. Standard response
If someone disgarees with you, they must be a liberal. Did this "someone" provide any evidence? Or is the accusation of being a liberal enough to throw out their judgment?

12. They're NOT Conservatives
Most of those guys are from the analytical school of economics. They are not doctrinaire with regard to theory. They formulate theory based upon the evidence, not look for evidence to support theories they already believe.

They tend to be anti-randian, and also don't adhere to the notion that regulation is anathema to business success and economic growth. So, liberterian and conservative economists would consider them liberal. But, i think what they are is analytical.

In my experience, far too many in the econ community are idealogues, not theoreticians or analysts. So, you get this type of pigeon-holing.

13. Bad news for Kerry votes in Utah!
Brace yourselves – first-time poster here!

The first thing I thought of when I read that 10 Nobel Laureates in economics came out for Kerry was that it put paid to any possible Kerry votes in rock solid Republican Utah‛s anti-intellectual Mormons. (That was a mouthful!) Forgive the cynicism. It just gets discouraging for a native New Jersey Democrat to go to the polls in Utah in every single election for forty years for what is essentially a wasted exercise. I don‛t like to call any group of people sheep, especially since there is a small percentage of Utah Mormons who are actually Democrats, but the Republicans here are pretty close.

22. Welcome to DU, jkshaw !!!
I'm a native Utahan, and I couldn't agree with you more. There are lot's of great mormon people, but like any fundie religion, they (in general) are prone to groupthink and conformity. They believe whatever FOX or KSL news tells them. They also are very obedient and compliant to those in positions of power, and tend to trust them completely.

My best advice to "Republican Utah‛s anti-intellectual Mormons": QUESTION AUTHORITY !!! (and read some books)

At least we'll have each other at the polls this Nov. :)

Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 12:28 PM by rocknation
If Nobel Laureates don't qualify as "fancy-pants-elitists," I don't know who does. So of COURSE they're going to embrace Kerry--this hardly qualifies as news!

20. Them's Is Nothin' But Fancy Pants Intylectials
I think about 50 Nobel Prize winning scientists signed a letter opposing the Iraq war before it started. I think it had zero or even less than zero effect on the dueling banjo constituency that supports Bush.

I wonder if the rest of the mesmerized, commercialized, brainwashed American people will awaken from their trance?

Geez,...I hope so,...before the dirt turns to mud.
