Cuban ships herself to U.S. in wooden crate
MIAMI, Florida (AP)

A Cuban woman tucked herself inside a wooden crate the size of a small filing cabinet and had herself shipped from the Bahamas to Miami aboard a cargo plane.

The woman, whose name was not released, will be allowed to stay in the United States. A cargo crew found her curled up inside the crate after unloading it late Tuesday at the Miami airport.

"Certainly she's lucky to be alive," said Zach Mann, spokesman for Customs and Border Protection.

Under the so-called wet-foot, dry-foot policy, Cubans who reach U.S. soil are usually allowed to stay, while those who are picked up at sea are sent home. Federal officials released no information on how the woman got from Cuba to the Bahamas. ..

3. Maybe she took a regular flight or went on a regular boat trip

Y'all don't think that the Bahamas denies Cubans from entering like the US does, or do you think that Cubans are trapped on their island?

Its usually the US that denies Cubans travel and immigration visas.

The real question is, just why didn't she use a legal immigration visa to the US? The US offers over 20,000 to Cubans per year. (Hint: even if Cubans fail a legal US immigration visa application due to a criminal record background check, done by the US in Cuba, the US's 'wet foot/ dry foot' policy allows even Cuban criminals who enter the US illegally to remain in the US and be set free on the streets of Miami within 24 hours.)

4. Mika, you are so right
There are many ways to get to Miami. One man I knew flew from Cuba to the Cayman Islands, then flew to Miami. Unfortunately stories like the woman in the box makes Americans think that Cubans can't leave the island unless they sneak out on a raft.

Just adds to the Miami propaganda that US media refuses to correct.

5. The Chevy truck rafters were denied US visas (due to criminal background)
Edited on Wed Aug-25-04 10:46 PM by Mika
But had they made it to US shores they would have been released into the general population within 24 hours. With a brand new, clean US criminal record, despite the fact that they had criminal assaults and robberies on their records in Cuba - as discovered by the US interest section in Havana.

That is why Cuban criminals come to the US by 'rafts', smugglers, and other illegal means. They can't come legally (by US law), but, by the loopholes the US provides ONLY for Cuban criminals -'wet foot/ dry foot' combined with the Cuban Adjustment Act - even Cuban criminals who have failed the US legal requirement for a legal US immigration visa get to stay if they get here illegally.

Amazingly, there were many DUhers who cheered the Chevy rafter cretins, and thought that they should be rewarded (via the Cuban Adjustment Act) with instant US work visas and green cards and social security and welfare for their criminal acts and reckless endangerment of a small child.

Go figure.

8. Oh, Jeez! You're absolutely right.
Hope Kerry's campaign picks up on this. That could have been bad news very easily.
