By Sarah Fulton Special to The Morning Call.. The pro-Kerry group, which included labor union members, educators and young adults, stood in front of Pottsville Area High School and waved signs reading ''Outsource Bush,'' ''President Bush: Take back your overtime pay cut'' and ''Let's defeat Bush again, don't let him steal this one!''
Another sign mentioned Schuylkill County unemployment and said, ''Tell them how good the economy is, Dick.''
Bill Mackey of West Penn Township, a member of the local pipefitters union, said the protest was made up of people who ''are just sick and tired of the way the country's going.''
The protestors were herded up the hill on 16th Street, away from the entrance to Martz Hall and about 75 feet from the corner of the road on which Cheney's motorcade was supposed to travel.
One protestor asked Pottsville police if they were being moved to a ''free speech zone'' so as not to be seen by Cheney. A captain from the department assured protestors the move was for safety reasons set by the Secret Service and not to conceal the opposition.
As one Bush supporter drove by the protestors with a car full of young children bearing signs reading ''Bush-Cheney in 2004,'' Kevin Moyer, an officer of the Teamsters union in Schuylkill County, said, ''Wait till your kids try to get a job.'' ..
