US Air Force deploying 1,000 flyers to Iraq from Germany
SPANGDAHLEM - The US Air Force is deploying 1,000 forces to Iraq from Spangdahlem air base in Germany, a base official said Thursday.

The forces are elements of the 52nd Fighter Wing, said Air Force Colonel Dave Goldfein.

The troop re-assignment comes amid a realignment of US forces abroad that includes possible base reductions or closures in Germany.

16. Even bush cant be that stupid, Can he?

Iran is not a toothless tiger like iraq was after a decade of sanctions and bombings. Iran has an effective army and air force. I'd even bet they have an effective air defense system.

We've lost almost a thousand american troops in iraq in over a year. An attack on iran would produce that many in a week. And we wouldn't just face iran. This would bring the rest of the muslim world into the fight. WWIII anyone?

18. Totally agree....
The shift in troops was not a PR ploy. It was to utilize the forces we have to invade Iran.

Expect a no holds barred all out massive air campaign. One thing they learned in Iraq is that the world is going to hate you anyway if you selectivly bomb and minimize collateral damage. So like the spouse who will be just as mad if you are one hour late or three hours late, Bush will use extreme force in Iran.

So they will level everything in Iran from the air. Tottally demoralize the population and set up a brutal puppet government.

Expect the air war to start before Nov. Expect Bush to call off elections and declare a Red terror alert - Resulting in martial law.

Did we really expect Bush to just roll over an loose an election?

No he is going all the way.

We've been right on this board time and time again. The predictions have come true.

This one is no exception.

What is stopping them? Who can?

This is an AEF rotation from Spang to Iraq. They will rotate BACK to Spang when their 4-month AEF rotation is up.

Bush Unveils Plan to Move Troops Home

Tue Aug 17, 7:55 AM ET

By Peter Wallsten and John Hendren Times Staff Writers

CINCINNATI — President Bush (news - web sites) on Monday announced his long anticipated plan to remove as many as 70,000 U.S. troops from Europe and Asia in a sweeping reorganization that he said would better prepare the military to handle crises.

13. from your link
White House officials billed Monday's announcement as the biggest troop realignment since the end of the Cold War, although Bush offered few details during remarks tucked into a campaign speech delivered here to the annual meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He said the return stateside of 60,000 to 70,000 troops and more than 100,000 relatives and civilian personnel would take 10 years. The president said the move would improve life for military families and save money — while also making the military more agile.

Around the world, the U.S. military would rely more heavily on Special Forces and small contingents of "forward forces" to provide rapid response, while shifting heavier equipment and regular divisions back home.

The plan would involve closing hundreds of military facilities around the world, administration officials said — substantially trimming the U.S. presence in historically strategic places such as Germany and the Korean peninsula. Half of U.S. military installations in Europe, particularly smaller bases, would be closed.

The changes would not directly affect the roughly 150,000 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan (news - web sites).

so the stated "plan" was to return them "stateside" and not directly affect the roughly 150,000 troops in Iraq - so if they are rotating them into Iraq, how can that not "directly affect" Iraq?

15. Because thet are rotating out
other F-16 (or A-10; the 52nd wing has both) units. The Air Force operates in AEFs. They deploy for four months at a time, then return to home base.

The normal rotation of one fighter unit in for another. The guys at Spang have to rotate into OIF just like every other F-16 Wing.

Instead of replying to the constant barrage of lies about kerry, can we turn the tables and redirect the focus of bush's planned attack on iran?

They'll just crap their pants and start panicking. It'll put rove on the spot for sure, and puts them all on the defensive.

25. Fighter jets are real useful in fighting against guerillas.
The best way to take care of a lone sniper is with a 1000 lb bomb dropped from 30,000 feet. Sure, you might collaterally kill 20 innocent people too, but that's the price they have to pay for freedom.

I know I'll feel safer once that Fighter Wing is redeployed to Iraq. Every day it seems I hear stories about how enemy air forces are relentlessly bombing our troops. That's all gonna end now with the 52nd providing air cover.

Those guys have tough skin. Regular lead from rifles won't penetrate. You need depleted uranium to do the job.

47. I am sure they will need to work on equipment in a fashion
not possible in Iraq.

From what I have been reading, maintenance was lagging.

The pilots need rest, some good Beer, and long legged women.
Of course some may need a long legged man, but that falls under, "don't ask, don't tell."

the only thing I fear is the neo cons strategy of putting the US into a position where they have no alternative (forcing a crisis) but to do what they want. the huge deficit has forced us to do what they want, and that is to cut social programs. Iraq has forced us into a war against Muslims.

"If we let our vision of the world go forth, and we embrace it entirely, and we don't try to piece together clever diplomacy but just wage total war, our children will sing great songs about us years from now." Richard Perle

41. It fits in with the story of U.S. planes straying far into Iran
That was a day or two ago. Many speculated that they were testing the Iranian air defenses, either preparatory to an invasion or an attack on nuclear sites. Maybe that's why this squadron is being deployed to Iraq. The coincidence of timing is suspicious. Bush is sure to spring some kind of October surprise, it is just a matter of time.
