The plot that was the talk of a pub in Pretoria

For months before dozens of South Africans allegedly set off on a "secret" mission to Equatorial Guinea, it was a hot topic in a pub in Pretoria.



Die Bosvelder (The Bush-lander) in Centurion, on the outskirts of the capital, was a regular meeting place for former soldiers of the apartheid era South African Defence Forces, and those who became guns for hire in the British mercenary outfit, Executive Outcomes.

In the pub, the hard men from several armies joked about "going fishing" in West Africa, or "exporting agricultural equipment", with a nod and a wink.

The "joke" was an alleged assignment in Equatorial Guinea, and it was the worst-kept secret of any campaign any of them had ever been close to before.
