Tory leader Michael Howard today hit out at White House aides after he was reportedly warned that he would never meet President George Bush.
In an extraordinary statement, he accused US officials of trying to “protect” Tony Blair in the face of calls for him to resign as Prime Minister over the Iraq war.
The row broke out after The Sun reported that a senior Bush aide, Karl Rove, had told Mr Howard last February not to bother coming to Washington as he would not see the President.According to the paper, the White House was furious that the Conservative leader had called on Mr Blair to consider his position in the wake of the Iraq conflict.
Mr Rove was said to have left a message saying: “You can forget about meeting the President full stop. Don’t bother coming, you are not meeting him.”Mr Howard today hit back with a defiant statement insisting that he would carry on doing his job as he saw fit.
“Britain shares with the United States many interests and many values, and the USA is our closest ally,” he said.“A Conservative Government would work very closely with President Bush or President Kerry, but my job as Leader of the Opposition is to say things as I see them in the interests of our country and to hold our Government to account.
“If some people in the White House, in their desire to protect Mr Blair, think I am too tough on Mr Blair or too critical of him, they are entitled to their opinion. But I shall continue to do my job as I see fit.”
