Hostages lured by 'US lies'
Twelve Nepalese held hostage in Iraq were shown on video footage on an Islamist website on Saturday, with one of them reading a statement saying they had been misled into working there by "American lies".

"We come here on the basis of an agreement between our company, Nepalese agency, and the American army, with the help of a Jordanian company," said one of the hostages, seated amongst the 11 other captives.

"The salary is $2 500 on guarantee and then they said for us that the situation is not dangerous in Iraq but we see the situation" is dangerous, added the hostage, reading a statement in broken English that was difficult to comprehend.

2. Indian labor is also being exploited.
Back when the Abu Ghraib story broke, there were some Indian workers who alleged that they were were lied to by Kellogg Brown & Root when they were hired as cooks, and they insisted that they were being held in Iraq against their will. It was the saddest story, but really got buried amid the Abu Ghraib story.

I'm going to see if I can find it now... we really need to stay on top of issues like this.

5. This should be unbelievable, but it's not after you've read enough
on how certain demons among us have treated people over the centuries. From the article:
They mortgaged a relative's house and land, paid the fee and flew to Kuwait in August with two of their friends. What they say they encountered when they got there landed on the front pages of Indian newspapers this week, with one headline declaring "Indians Abused in Iraq" in "U.S. Slave Camps."

Within days, the brothers said, they and their friends found themselves on an American military base in northern Iraq working for a Saudi subcontractor of Kellogg, Brown & Root, or KBR, a subsidiary of Halliburton. They said their supervisor, who had taken their passports in Kuwait, told them they were obligated to work on the base for six months and could not leave.

Working alongside 200 other laborers, from India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, they first cleaned American latrines and then washed American dishes, the brothers said. Their pay was roughly $150 a month, they said, less than half of what the recruiter had promised.
(snip/...)
Sad to know how our upstanding companies are accomplishing slavery while keeping their "reputations" unchallenged, isn't it?
