Nazi soldier loses U.S. citizenship

A federal judge Friday revoked the citizenship of an 84-year-old Bensenville man who was a Nazi Waffen SS member stationed at a concentration camp near Berlin during World War II .

Joseph Wittje, a retired bricklayer who moved to the United States in 1950, said he will appeal the ruling, which could force him to leave the country.

"The goal in all these cases is deportation," said Eli Rosenbaum, director of the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Special Investigations, which since 1978 has filed cases that led to the citizenship revocation of 76 former Nazis, including Wittje. So far, 60 have been deported, Rosenbaum said.

Wittje was a Romanian of German ethnicity who served in the Romanian Army from February 1942 to July 1943, according to the ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Suzanne B. Conlon. He then served in the Waffen SS, for which he was a private in the 9th Company SS Death's Head Guard Battalion.

A Peabody construction worker accused of being one of the executioners who slaughtered some 1,200 Bosnian Muslim men in 1995 was charged yesterday with entering the United States illegally by claiming refugee status and not revealing his role in a notorious Bosnian Serb Army unit that took part in the worst massacre of civilians in Europe since the end of World War II.

Despite being a suspected war criminal, Marko Boskic, 40, was able to enter the United States four years ago under his own name and moved to Peabody, where he hardly kept a low-profile. Boskic had repeated run-ins with the law that led to numerous arrests on charges of drunken driving and serious assaults.
