Equatorial Guinea leader calls for death
Sun 29 August, 2004 22:37

LONDON (Reuters) - Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo says an international plot to overthrow him would have resulted in a massacre and those responsible deserve death by firing squad.

In a rare interview, Obiang told the Mail on Sunday he was prepared to visit Britain if necessary to secure extradition for those accused of trying to oust him.

"I want to see them in my country, in my prisons ... If I were to be the judge, I would apply the maximum penalty -- execution by firing squad," he said.

The trial resumes in the capital Malabo on Monday of 19 men accused of involvement in an attempt to overthrow the government in the tiny oil-rich African nation.

4. Ely Calil
Last year, Mr Calil's eldest son, George was arrested following the death of
his girlfriend, the actress Laura Sadler, who played nurse Sandy Harper in
the popular medical drama Holby City. Ms Sadler died while "watching the
sunrise" after falling 40ft from the balcony of George Calil's Holland Park flat.
The toxicology report at the inquest revealed large amounts of alcohol,
derivatives of cocaine and a trace of diazepam in her body. Also an actor,
George had played alongside her in Holby City. He was later released
without charge.

5. Jerusalem-based think tank What's going on
"The Africa Oil Policy Initiative Group
is led by Robert Heiler and Paul Michael
Wihbey of the Institute for Advanced
Strategic and Political Studies, a conservative
Jerusalem-based think tank which maintains
that West African oil "can help stabilize the
Middle East, end Muslim terror and secure a
measure of energy security."

WASHINGTON, November 6, 2002

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, a former oil company executive, predicted the same a year earlier,
when, referring to the instability of Mideast oil, he said, "Along with Latin America, West Africa is
expected to be one of the fastest-growing sources of oil and gas for the American market."

Today, U.S. oil firms dominate the Equatorial Guinea landscape. ExxonMobil, Amerada Hess, Chevron
Texaco and Marathon Oil have the largest share of the country's oil production. Based on new
discoveries, analysts expect their total collective investment of $3 billion to approach about $5 billion
by the end of 2002.

"The government gave the American oil companies
carte blanche and threw its doors open," said
Christanio, a Jehovah's Witness missionary from
Canada who has spent nearly four years in the
capital Malabo. "The Americans are slicing their way
effortlessly through the oil blocks."

"These men are nothing but
blood-thirsty pirates and thieves
with no regard for human life... If
their plans had gone ahead there
would have been a massacre,"
he said.

Included in the list of those
accused of bankrolling the coup
are London-based Lebanese
businessman Ely Calil and Mark
Thatcher, the son of former
British Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher.

South African arms dealer Nick du Toit last week told the court in
Equatorial Guinea he was promised a large amount of money for
overthrowing President Obiang's government.

He has also said the
government of Spain - as well as
some officials in the US
administration - were aware of
the coup plot and had given it
their tacit backing.

Dramamine anyone.

7. SA considers request to question Thatcher
By Carole Landry

South Africa on Monday examined a request from Equatorial Guinea to question Sir Mark Thatcher about his role as the alleged financier of a coup plot as two suspected mercenaries came forward to shed more light on the alleged conspiracy.

Malabo requested on Friday that it be allowed to question the son of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher who was charged on August 25 with bankrolling a bid to topple the president of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea.

"The request is arriving in our office this morning," said justice ministry spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago. "We still have to process it."
