WP: Bush Tells W.Va. Backers to Reach Out (urges wooing of Dems)
President Urges Wooing of Democrats, 'Discerning Independents' to Win Edge

WHEELING, W.Va., Aug. 29 -- President Bush on Sunday urged his supporters in the coal and steel belt to begin courting Democrats and independents, and advisers said he will do the same with a convention speech that includes plans aimed at strengthening high schools and helping the uninsured.

Speaking to a packed arena outside Pittsburgh, where mentions of hunting, fishing and Jesus all received thunderous ovations, Bush said his followers must not forget to register Democrats and "discerning independents" to vote this fall in a traditionally Democratic state that he won by six percentage points in 2000.

"I believe our message is good for Republicans, I believe our message is good for Democrats, and I believe our message is good for independents," Bush said. His campaign underscored its new outreach effort by having Bush introduced by a Democrat, steelworker and shop steward Rick Casini, who called Bush the "original promise keeper, the man who saved steel" by imposing tariffs on imports for 20 months.

The steelworker was booed when he began by saying, "My name is Rick Casini and I'm a Democrat."

4. This is all so unfair to elephants.
They are great and good creatures. They neither asked nor deserved to be associated with the Republican party.

Like they don't have enough trouble.

5. I find it ironic...
... that the Republican symbol is the elephant, an animal normally associated with having a remarkably good memory; yet Bush will require an almost pathological ignorance of recent history in order to get elected.

then they deserve four more years of shrub! What is that saying...the people get the leader that they deserve...or something to that effect. I can't believe they have the balls to play this! Well, yes I can, but it still angers me.

8. Steelworkers for Bush???
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 10:51 PM by thatgemguy
I live close to Wheeling and watched the coverage of the event on the local news.

Our tri state area is home to two large steel companies, Wheeling Pitt, and ISG Weirton (formerly Weirton Steel). Seated on the stage behind pResident Bush were a number of men wearing t shirts that read "Steelworkers for Bush". To the best of my knowledge, Rick Casini, the democrat who introduced the Shrub, is not a shop steward at either of the local steel mills.

It was revealed on the news that the workers on stage were from Huntington Steel, a company in Huntington, WV, several hours south of Wheeling. I guess they could find any steelworkers from the local area to put on the t-shirts and praise the Shrub.

10. I was going to sleep and I thought of this...Riddle me this..
Why is bush turning away people(ala SS)at his rallies for not being 100% behind him when at the same rally he wants other people to reach out to DEms?

Is this the kind of logic that makes everything he touches turn to shit?
