NYT: Upstaging Before the Show
(snip)

And some of the delegates suggested that the protests would backfire to Mr. Bush's benefit, by painting Senator John Kerry - whose sister, Peggy, joined some of the weekend's events - as captive to demonstrators outside the mainstream.

"I left God's country," said Leon Mosley of Waterloo, Iowa, co-chairman of his state party. "They could use a bunch of people from Iowa to come here to show New Yorkers what life is all about, what being patriotic is all about, and what country is all about. I'm as confident about Bush being re-elected as I am that eggs are going to be in New York tomorrow morning.''

But some veteran conventiongoers suggested that the Republicans would be unwise to count their chickens just yet. In their own outspoken way, the protesters were making precisely the same point as Mr. Mosley, with children in strollers, grandparents on canes, all accepting the withering Sunday heat - and the overwhelming security presence intended to keep the march past Madison Square Garden orderly.

"I've been going to Republican conventions since 1972, and I've never seen a convention with as many protesters in the streets," said David Gergen, who has worked for several Republican presidents, and Bill Clinton. "The irony is that was a convention held here because of echoes of 9/11, but it opens with echoes of Chicago and the Vietnam war.

"The protests are anti-Bush, with heavy antiwar overtones, but this is Chicago without the fisticuffs, without the fight, without the bloodshed - so far," Mr. Gergen added. "To interpret this politically is hard, but my gut is that large, peaceful protests are not what the Republicans want. The protesters are stealing the story for the first day and drowning out the Republican message. If there's violence, that could all change."

Fuck you in your stupid ass! When al Qaeda wanted to attack the symbol of America, did he attack fucking De Moines? Did he blow up a fucking Cracker Barrel Restaurant? Did he molest one of your Iowa pole barn churches? I don't think he did!

27. bin Laden = GOP. There has never been any proof of OBLs involvement
but plenty of proof of GOP complicity in 9-11. He's just their boogieman.

You know, there's another article in LBN about activists heckling republican assholes as they make their way to tonight's Broadway shows. As usual, some posters were lamenting such uncivilized forms of protest. You know, fuck them. They hate NY, they hate you, they hate everything that's good, positive, humane, free and fair. They should be scorned and shunned anywhere they go.

And to Leon: fuck you and fuck your God's country.

21. I agree wholeheartedly!
I am about forty miles from the Iowa border. We have ties to Iowa, and farm property there. My daughter lives there.

I know there are protestors from Iowa in New York, too.

Yes, fuck you. A big middle finger to ya, from this progressive farm
wife from the heartland!

You do not represent all of us, repuke slime who does not know the meaning of symbolism.

I love New York. I am sorry that the repukes are using you.

2. I saw David Gergen earlier this evening
I think it was with Mark Shields and the Capitol Gang group at the convention site. He noted that these protesters are "very, very angry," and elaborated on that a bit. I thought it was a VERY good comment from him, and he said it with a bit of concern and perhaps wonder or amazement in his voice. He'd talked to some of them, I think.

I know Gergen's a Republican, and sometimes I could throttle him for some of his remarks, but for the most part I've always liked his more thoughtful and more moderate approach to most everything. IOW, as a Republican, he's a breath of fresh air (again, usually).

4. Methinks David Gergen
is going to vote for Kerry. He has been appearing on various news programs, notably The Newshour, and continues to express dismay over the Bat Shit Veterans smear and the general tenor of the Bush regime.

7. Then why did the GOP come to New York Mr. Mosley, if....
they are so immoral then why are you here?

Gee, maybe you just want to exploit the City so that your "leader" can steal another term in the White House.

:grr:

10. Mosley lacks manners!

What a jerk! Didn't his momma teach him to be polite when visiting?

Talk about adding insult to injury: first the Republicans choose to have their convention in NYC to exploit 9/11, then their representatives insult the place by saying they can show New Yorkers "what life is all about."

GAAK

Makes me so mad I could just spit. And I don't live anywhere near New York!

13. He looks part Native American
He ought to know better than to suck up to the Republicans. Look at all his affiliations. He obviously thinks that the Republicans are the law-and-order party.

Mr. Mosley - take a good hard look at the way that George W. Bush has lied to you. Is that the sort of person you want to support?

Thanks to DEMOCRATIC legislation, and of course now that he's secured that monthly retirement check, he has no problem badmouthing the people who helped him when HE NEEDED HELP...

Leon is a republican though.. they love to take and take and take, and all the while, criticize the very ones who are giving :(

18. re: "NYT: Upstaging Before the Show"
"They could use a bunch of people from Iowa to come here to show New Yorkers what life is all about, what being patriotic is all about, and what country is all about."

First of all Mr. Moseby, NYC is a magnet to people from all over the world to live on the cutting edge of life, inclusive of any discipline. It affords one the individual to live in a true microcosm of the planet. Chances are there are as many people in NYC that think the same as you do in Iowa, however they are surrounded by millions of "intellectuals" (read gun hating Bush bashing abortion loving flag burning Liberal Democrats). So really you have nothing to show that hasn't been seen and examined. Fugheddaboudit !

Secondly:

so far," Mr. Gergen added. "To interpret this politically is hard, but my gut is that large, peaceful protests are not what the Republicans want."

Now come on Mr Gergen, are you truly that mentally diminutive? Politically it means that we hate George W Bush and his cabal of butchers and pirates and that media shills such as yourself have surrendered all credibility. And that just shows how morally corrupt the GOP is because they are truly hoping for violence while we pray for peace.

Oh sorry Gerkin, that wasn't political it was the TRUTH.

Truth Out

19. In a related story...
Return of the Egg Bandit or Labor Dispute?
Gotham Sizzles Over Mysteriously Empty Skillets

NYC,. On Monday morning omeletless delegates who had been primed for high style "city eats" by the GOP, were found gorging themselves instead on hash browns and anything they could find that looked like a bisquit, in an attempt to maintain cholesteral levels.

Law enforcement seemed certain that the notoriously clumsy egg bandit had struck again. Sanitation workers expect to complete the clean up of the last rash of thefts sometime in the fall.

But certain shadowy chicken unions told a different story to the press. The left leaning fowl placed responsibility squarely on member's dissatisfaction with stress inducing, Bush administration policies which they claim has led to an upset in production. More on this as it becomes available.....
