Subpoena Seeks Records About Delegate Lists on Web

ASHINGTON, Aug. 29 - The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation and is demanding records regarding Internet postings by critics of the Bush administration that list the names of Republican delegates and urge protesters to give them an unwelcome reception in New York City.

Federal prosecutors said in a grand jury subpoena that the information was needed as part of an investigation into possible voter intimidation. Protesters and civil rights advocates argued that the Web postings were legitimate political dissent, not threats or intimidation.

The investigation, conducted by the Secret Service, comes at a time when federal officials have begun an aggressive effort to prevent what they say could be violence by demonstrators at the convention this week and at other major political events. Large-scale demonstrations in New York began over the weekend.

3. Aren't the delegate slates from most states chosen by methods which
make the identities of individual delegates a matter of public record?
How does it work in your own state? How can the names of delegates be some deep dark secret? Are they gonna wear bags over their heads going in and out of the convention site to protect their secret identities?

This business of it being OK to keep all sorts of secret info on the average citizen and relax limits to official surveillance and yet keep matters which concern the public interests privately held (like who attends policy making meetings with the vice president) is getting sorta annoying.

4. If not, they should be
Democracy is not something that can be practiced in secret. Party delegates are just as important to our system as congressional representatives or judges.

In what sort of system are the names of representatives or judges kept secret?

9. The list of Maine Delegates was printed in local paper
I thought the names were public record everywhere.

This investigation smells.
