Area rally prompts complaint by Kerry
Aug 29, 2004

A complaint filed by Sen. John Kerry's election campaign charges that a political rally in Alachua County last weekend is "further evidence" President Bush has illegally coordinated with a Vietnam veterans' group in attacking the senator's war record.

Filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday, the 21-page document alleges that Swift Boat Veterans for Truth - an independent veterans' group that has criticized Kerry's account of events for which he won several military medals - is "working hand-in-glove" with Bush "to smear Senator Kerry and his record of service."

Members of the swift boat group were scheduled to speak in Gainesville Aug. 21, but canceled after reports surfaced that a flier promoting the event had turned up at the local Republican Executive Committee office, which also houses the Bush-Cheney re-election headquarters.

A permit for the rally taken out by the swift boat group and obtained by The Sun listed the local REC office as its contact.

Coordination with the group - a charge both President Bush and county Republican Party chairman Travis Horn have repeatedly denied - would be a violation of federal law.

These are the documents that I obtained and turned over to the Kerry Campaign last week. This is the first mention of this info that I have seen in the 'mainstream' press. I just hope this has legs.

Links to all the documents are Item #18 on the link below:

2. "I don't know how it showed up at the campaign headquarters."
Well, maybe Jeebus MIRACLED that flyer into your campaign headquarters?! You think?

4. I'd love to check their hard drives
In a sense, it is true, the Bush Campaign did not collaborate with the SBV's to organize this rally. Heck, from what I've found out, they didn't even bother to tell them. They invited a couple of the SBVs, that live in the area, but all those guys seem to know is that they were going to speak at some rally. They didn't participate in the actual organization of the event.

This rally was planned and run by the Alachua Co Republican Executive Committee and the Bush Cheney Campaign, out of Campaign Headquarters.

11. The Party took out the permit in the SBV's name without 'coordination'?
That's a fraud ... possibly a felony.

13. Yes, that is what I am starting to realize
I kept trying to prove a connection only to realize that the ACREC folks did this on their own. They planned and organized the event, raised the funds from individuals active in the party. Sent out press releases and emails to announce the event. Wrote 4 separate contracts in the name of 4 different groups, but all 4 contracts were signed by the same person who calls herself the Secretary and Event Coordinator for the ACR EC and then used the 1212 N. Main Street (GOP Headquarters) address on all four agreements.

Yes, I would say fraud and a few other crimes were committed here. Usually, this sort of thing is almost impossible to prove, but between the Use Agreements and their own statements to the press, I think the Kerry campaign has a very good case.

14. That was before the documents showed up
The documents are solid evidence, that will hold up in a court of law.

Plus there is a lot more evidence of wrong doing by the Bush Campaign, other than these documents. There is a pattern of behavior here and an apparent disregard for campaign laws that the Bush Campaign is exhibiting in numerous other ways.

This rally and these documents will take the case out of the FEC and can now go to the Federal Courts instead. This is going to be a whole other ball of wax.
