Bush Suggests Terror War Cannot Be Won
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 06:40 PM by neuvocat
NASHUA, N.H. - President Bush (news - web sites) ignited a Democratic inferno of criticism on Monday by suggesting the war on terrorism could not be won, forcing his aides to scramble to defend his remarks just as he had hoped to bask in convention accolades.

This means that it will crescendo on Wednesday or Thursday, right before the selected one makes his speech.

15. I thought that Bu$h & FUCheney kept saying we needed to Re-elect them
in order to win the War on Terra? (Because with only them, we can win by staying the course....) Now Bush is saying its not winnable?

So why should people be voting for these people again?

Winning the wAR ON tERROR would mean the defeat of the USA. GW Bush will ensure that the USA is never defeated, hence the wAR ON tERROR cannot be won.

Then - Sept. 17th 2001
``We will win the war and there will be costs,'' Bush said
during a visit to the Pentagon, badly damaged when hit by one of the hijacked airliners. ``The U.S. military is ready to defend freedom at any cost,'' he said as the Defense Department readied call-up orders for an estimated 35,000 reservists.

13. The concept of 'war president' makes me sick to my stomach.
If we can't win it - then ask him to be the 'peace president'.

That's where we should have been from the beginning if we really think of ourselves as leaders. Clinton was a leader. No Republican has been a leader.

21. um, with all due respect...
...he's right. The "war on terror" is a scam and cannot be "won." That Bush is the primary perpetrator of the scam is doubly ironic.

Now I just wish a few more prominant democrats would find the courage to face this reality and call for an end to this nonsense.

now is the time for Kerry to say "Then what the fuck are we doing in Iraq? Talk about giving aid and comfort to the enemy!"

22. B*sh was just being nuanced and sophisticated, so sayeth Scott McClellan.
"White House spokesman Scott McClellan sought to clarify the president's remarks, telling reporters, 'He was talking about winning it in the conventional sense ... about how this is a different kind of war and we face an unconventional enemy.'"

So, let's review:

Sensitive, nuanced Republican = good

Sensitive, nuanced Democrat = bad

25. Israel has done a great job in winning their war on terror
as has the British in Northern Ireland. Duh? I think that Bush had a Freudian slip in which for once he told the absolute truth. The war on terror cannot be won because it is our policies that are creating terrorists, just as Israel and Britain's policies in Occupied Palestine and Northern Ireland respectively, are responsible for the terrorism they face.

Change our foreign policy, abandon imperialism and militarism, and stop enabling the subjugation of others, and we begin the long process of draining the swamp from which terrorists come.

Every bomb we drop, every village we destroy, plants the seeds of terrorism!

39. Maybe that's because it's not a real war
When terrorist attacks by individuals who don't represent a specific state nor even a consistent ideology are lumped together in a description of a world war against "them thar evil doers" it's time to question whether this really deserves to be called a specific war. Certainly Bush hasn't always treated it like a war as he has not offered Geneva Convention rights to captured suspected terrorists, nor the label of enemy combatants when it has been inconvenient to do so. But he promotes the terror war when it becomes convenient for him to suggest that we are at war and that the Patriot Act is a wartime necessity and when he wants to call himself a War President. Then, when he can't justify his failure to round up Osama Bin Laden, he states that this nebulous idea of a world wide terror war can't ever be completed. He chooses to say that the attack on the Twin Towers is an act of war and yet the anthrax attacks are not. We are being completely manipulated by the language used by this administration.

40. And today he's flipped his flop YET again...
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20040831/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_bush_28

In a speech to the national convention of the American Legion, Bush said, "We meet today in a time of war for our country, a war we did not start yet one that we will win.

That statement differed from Bush's earlier comment, aired Monday in a pre-taped television interview, that "I don't think you can win" the war on terror. That had Democrats running for the cameras to criticize Bush for being defeatist and flip-flopping from previous predictions of victory.
