U.S. Warplanes Fire on Afghan Village; Eight People Reported Killed

KABUL, Afghanistan -- U.S. warplanes bombed a village in eastern Afghanistan, killing eight people and destroying the camp of a Danish relief group after assailants rocketed a nearby government office, Afghan officials and the aid group's director said Tuesday.

The exchange began late Monday when assailants fired 25 rockets at the mayor's office in Mano Gai, 105 miles east of the capital, Kabul, said Sayed Fazel Akbar, the governor of Kunar province. Police responded with small arms fire, he said.

"Then the American planes came and bombarded Weradesh village," from where the rockets were launched, he said. "There are casualties there, but we don't know how many or if they are civilians or the enemy."

U.S. military officials had no immediate comment.

1. This is what the Nazi's did to partisans in France, Denmark, Norway, etc
whenever the partisans assassinated a Nazi soldier, blew up a bridge, or wrecked German supplies, they would kill a bunch of innocent civilians. Of course when the photos come out on Al Jazeera of dismembered 4 year olds from this incident we will hear the platitudes from the military about how sorry they are but war is hell and accidents are unavoidable.

But we can rest assured that the Republicans are protecting our freedoms. The day will come when the victims and families of these US attacks, which are numbering in the hundreds of thousands, will forget their grudge against us and finally realize they are free and that we are liberators. The Germans thought the same would happen in all the countries they goose stepped across.

2. Just another example of Bush's sterling leadership
Well, at least the soldiery went in afterward to write up damage estimates. Now, of course, the Danes will leave off their project to get clean running water to the area while they reassess security.

That should be a short meeting. What's the Danish phrase for "bug out"?

A US bombing raid killed at least six civilians and wounded nine in eastern Afghanistan, after assailants attacked US-appointed government positions, an Afghan official said.

The aerial attack followed a night raid by unknown fighters in the Manogi district of Kunar province, deputy provincial police chief, Muhammad Arif Nizami said in Asadabad, Kunar's capital.

"As a result of the bombing by planes, six civilians have lost their lives, nine more have been injured and eight houses have been demolished in Manogi," Nizami said.

Nizami said the bombing was carried out at around 2am (2230 GMT).

Man Questioned in Afghan Car Bomb Probe

Mon Aug 30, 6:15 PM ET

By STEPHEN GRAHAM, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - Investigators probing a deadly car bombing in the Afghan capital questioned a man detained at Kabul airport with traces of explosives on his hands, officials said Monday, while U.S. authorities warned all Americans in the capital to be inconspicuous.

Taliban rebels claimed responsibility for Sunday's blast at a U.S. security firm, but officials said they are not ruling out any suspects, including al-Qaida. Hospital officials said 10 people were killed, including three Americans. The company confirmed that three of its American employees had been killed.

NATO troops grew suspicious of a man on the grounds of Kabul airport on Sunday, spokesman Lt. Cdr. Ken Mackillop said. After finding explosives on his hands, NATO turned the man over to Afghan authorities on Monday. The man was not identified.

"There is a suspicion against him, but for now there is no link or proof that he was involved in yesterday's attack," Interior Ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the blast at the office of Dyncorp Inc., which provides bodyguards for Afghan President Hamid Karzai and works for the American government in Iraq.

9. "German warplanes attack Guernica"
I loathe the 'warplanes' word, it carries within it an evaluation that it was a legitimate thing to do.

It's a word for con artists.

10. The use of the 'warplanes' word
tends to conjure up images of WWII, a grim struggle for survival between two equally matched sides.

What it means in real life is an overwhealmingly powerful nation strafing a defenseless third world village.

Funnily enough just like this.
