U.S. Troops Wounded in Iraq Near 7,000
U.S. Troops Wounded in Iraq Near 7,000

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The number of American troops wounded in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 is approaching 7,000, according to figures published Tuesday by the Pentagon. The death toll for U.S. military personnel is 975, plus three Defense Department civilians.

The wounded total has approximately doubled since mid-April, when casualties and deaths mounted rapidly as the insurgency intensified. The death toll over that period has grown by about 300.

The Pentagon, which generally updates its casualty count each week, said the number of wounded stands at 6,916, up 226 from a week earlier. In the two months since the United States handed over political sovereignty to an interim Iraq government, the wounded total has grown by about 1,500.

13. It seems like a high ratio - which is good.
There was a time when getting wounded was far more likely to kill you. Looks like some of our force-protection measures are working.

U.S. casualties from Iraq war top 9,000

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The number of U.S. casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom -- troops killed, wounded or evacuated due to injury or illness -- has passed 9,000, according to new Pentagon data.

In addition to the 397 service members who have died and the 1,967 wounded, 6,861 troops were medically evacuated for non-combat conditions between March 19 and Oct. 30, the Army Surgeon General's office said.

That brings total casualties among all services to more than 9,200, and represents an increase of nearly 3,000 non-combat medical evacuations reported since the first week of October. The Army offered no immediate explanation for the increase.

A leading veterans' advocate expressed concern.

"We are shocked at the dramatic increase in casualties," said Steve Robinson, executive director of the National Gulf War Resource Center.

12. The miracles of modern medicine -- how they can "unwound"
all those people. Amazing, isn't it?

We need to send these 3 different reports around to some of the blogs, and some of the more receptive media as well (Helen Thomas and Paul Krugman come immediately to mind -- maybe Conason, et. al.).

11. I would imagine that there would be a lot more
dead if not for the immediate access to medical care.

The whole thing is a rather barbaric throwback considering this is 2004. We are no better than the caveman.
