The West views Chechnya through Soviet eyes

"How the West chooses to believe the official truth about Chechnya

With the second war in Chechnya, Soviet approaches to truth have been revived. Now there are two versions of the truth about Chechnya circulating around the world.

The official version, the "flourishing" truth, may be termed "Putin's truth". It says that everything is improving in Chechnya, and the federal government has set a so-called "political process" in motion.

The second version is the truth based on real life, which may be termed the "grass-roots truth": the voices of people who have suffered in the war, the constant abductions, the extrajudicial executions, the bloody landmine explosions, an entire people turned into outcasts and cornered.

Moscow Subway Station Blast Kills 10

By STEVE GUTTERMAN, Associated Press Writer

MOSCOW - A woman strapped with explosives blew herself up outside a busy Moscow subway station Tuesday night, killing at least 10 people and wounding more than 50 — the second terrorist attack to hit Russia in a week.

Seven days earlier, almost to the hour, two Russian jetliners crashed within minutes of each other in what officials say were terrorist bombings. All 90 people aboard the aircraft were killed, and the investigation has focused on two Chechen women believed to have been passengers.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Tuesday's bombing, but suspicion was certain to fall on Chechen separatists and their supporters. Several female suicide bombers allegedly connected with the rebels have caused carnage in Moscow and other Russian cities in a series of attacks in recent years.

...

She "decided to destroy herself in a crowd of people" in a busy area between the subway station and a nearby department store-supermarket complex, Luzhkov said, adding that her bomb was packed with bolts and pieces of metal.

6. It is interesting that the bombers have all been women
lately. The use of relatively small, harder to intercept explosives in just the right spot on an aircraft is novel also, to my knowledge. I hope someone in charge of security here is taking notes.

8. have terrorist incidents gone down?
(Recall Powell said they did, before, like a failed corporate raider, they later revised the estimates).

Way up to coincide with RNC if you ask me.

Yeah
