Touchscreen trouble
Wednesday, September 1, 2004

The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office tells Bay News 9 a problem with a computer server is slowing down the collection of election results.

The computer that tallies election results from cartridges from the touchscreen voting machines had some performance problems. The office is currently taking steps to fix the the problems while protecting the integrity of the existing votes already tabulated.

Bay News 9 is closely monitoring the situation and will have more on this developing story overnight and on Your Morning News.

Hillsborough's results stalled for hours as elections officials struggled to figure out why their computerized counting system malfunctioned. The slowdown did not mean votes were being lost or miscounted, Elections Supervisor Buddy Johnson said.

Johnson blamed the slowdown on adjustments that had to be made to the computer system. More cartridges delivered from polling sites, including early voting tallies, were being fed into the system than could be processed, Johnson said.

An administrative law judge last week sided with critics in concluding that an agency rule prohibiting recounts of votes cast on touch-screen machines violates a state law that mandates manual recounts in close elections.

4. I'm so relieved that they cleared that up.
It is awful, just awful.

I do hope Kerry's strategy doesn't include Florida.
