MPs probe Blair's spy chief
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 09:22 AM by emad aisat sana
By Paul Waugh, Evening Standard Deputy Political Editor
1 September 2004

Snip
Tony Blair's personal intelligence chief is to have his role investigated amid claims that the Cabinet was sidelined over key decisions on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Sir David Omand, Mr Blair's Security and Intelligence Co-ordinator, will have his record and powers probed by a powerful committee of MPs, the Evening Standard has learned.

The Intelligence and Security Committee will review Sir David's impact since his post was created in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

The committee, which has been scathing about intelligence blunders over Iraq's alleged arsenal, is understood to be keen to quiz not only Sir David but also Cabinet Secretary Sir Andrew Turnbull and his predecessor.

The review will centre on whether Cabinet ministers have been kept properly informed since the Cabinet Secretary's role on intelligence matters was given to the new post. Sir David reports directly to Mr Blair and does not attend Cabinet meetings. Sir David may also be asked why he failed to tell the Prime Minister last summer that key intelligence on Iraq's alleged WMD had been declared unreliable by MI6.
