NYC SBA (Cops) Will Initiate Civil Proceedings Vs. RNC Demonstrators....
New York City Sergeants Benevolent Association Will Initiate Civil Proceedings against RNC Demonstrators Whose Illegal Actions Cause Personal Injury to SBA Members

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 2004--Edward Mullins, President of the 10,000 member New York City Sergeant's Benevolent Association, has announced another weapon in support of the New York City Police Department's fight against violent and criminal behavior by demonstrators at the Republican National Convention. Mullins has instructed the members of his Union to pursue personal injury lawsuits against any demonstrator who injures a New York City Police Sergeant, and has provided the lawyers to do it.

Mullins said his announcement was a necessary response to several incidents of violence against police officers in recent days by crowds demonstrating at the Republican National Convention, including the vicious beating of Detective William Sample, Jr. on Monday. Detective Sample was badly bruised and suffered internal injuries after being stomped and kicked by demonstrators while responding by scooter to a call for help by a fellow police officer. "The increased level of violence confronting New York's law enforcement officers by unruly and dangerous protestors cannot be ignored or tolerated," said Mullins. "If you are inclined to hit a cop, we will find you, we will sue you, and we will make you pay."
