Protesters Disrupt Convention Gathering

By ANNE GEARAN, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - Anti-war demonstrators disrupted a Republican youth gathering on the floor of the party convention Wednesday, shortly after President Bush (news - web sites)'s twin daughters left the stage.

Jenna and Barbara Bush introduced White House chief of staff Andrew Card. As he began speaking, 10 protesters sitting in the crowd jumped up, blew whistles and began to chant, "Bush kills." They also removed sweat shirts to reveal T-shirts reading "Bush Drop Global Debt Now."

Card tried to continue speaking, but was drowned out and stopped as young participants in the morning event scuffled with the demonstrators. Police moved in to remove the protesters, including a young woman hoisted out by two officers — one at her shoulders and one at her knees.

At least one delegate was slightly injured. Suhr Daniel, 20, of Milwaukee, said he was punched in the head by a protester. He had a cut near his temple and the side of his face was reddened.

1. Are we safe yet??

How in the world did they get in there?

I thought they are keeping us safe.

They can't even keep themselves safe.

2. 'punched in the head by a protester. '
Not sure I believe that story. Sounds like the Hitler Youth-I mean young Repubs- reacted violently. Wouldn't surprise me.

If you're "lovin (sic)
the fact these guys are getting their skulls cracked," violence is obviously NOT against all you stand for.

Violence is WRONG period. We should not be praising it.

7. A good NY "tune-up" sans any brain damage or major injuries is
putting a big, big smile on my face and I wish it wasn't. I'm not as evolved as you, yet. Thought I was. But the thought of a scared delegate with shitstained pants holed up in a hotel room, having to toss his Lion King tickets makes me click my heels. I know its wrong and I'd go see a therapist but I have no health insurance. Maybe Roveco will think twice before throwing a hate party in my town.

Yes, it's wrong. Now, where do you draw the line between necessary and unnecessary?

That line does exist, and I think we would all do well to at least consider carefully where that line is for each of us.

Is it when there are simple peaceful protests?

Is it when innocent people along with the "guilty" are rounded up and tossed into a warehouse they're calling a jail?

Is it when the police are issued automatic weapons while it is illegal for you to have the same? Or is it when they start using those weapons on nonviolent protesters?

Is it when they make a list of names, or when they use that list of names?

Or is it when that list becomes accepted by the mysterious "They" as a hit list?

Is it when laws get passed to keep protesters penned in, or is it when that pen becomes a shooting gallery for Authority?

Where, exactly, is that thin red line between necessary and unnecessary violence, anyway?

edited to add: A universal condemnation of appropriately applied violence is just as bad as open warmongering, and just as destructive in the long run, IMO.

That line I'm talking about? I'm still trying to figure out where it lies as well.

9. I think this is great, keep making the news and keep these issues
at the forefront. The more stories that run about war, ad global debt, the more people are going to wonder about what is going on and start paying attention. Also, I totally agree that this looks bad for the Repubs that they can't even control their own convention, how can they protect a whole country?
