Arnold Schwarzenegger lauded the president for his stand against terrorism and support for the economy during a prime-time speech at the Republican National Convention Tuesday night in New York's Madison Square Garden. Meanwhile, however, at a nearby hotel the Bush-Cheney campaign was holding a closed-door rally for far- right antigay conservatives. The "Faith, Family, and Freedom Rally" drew hundreds to the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Among the notoriously antigay leaders who were introduced but did not speak were the Reverend Jerry Falwell, conservative activist Gary Bauer, and Tony Perkins, head of the conservative Family Research Council, according to several people who attended the event.
The campaign also distributed written endorsements from evangelical leaders including the Reverend Jack Graham, former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, and James Dobson of Focus on the Family, an antigay Colorado ministry. "I'll be voting for President Bush," Dobson wrote. "President Bush understands the great moral issues of our time." Bush appeared on video, outlining his support for the policies most important to religious conservatives, including his support for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. He pledged to "foster a culture of life" and "end discrimination against people of faith" in federal funding. ..
