Spy probe scans neo-cons' Israel ties
By Jim Lobe

..........................................................

SEATTLE - The growing scandal over claims that a Pentagon official passed highly classified secrets to a Zionist lobby group appears to be part of a much broader set of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Pentagon investigations of close collaboration between prominent US neo-conservatives and Israel dating back some 30 years.

According to knowledgeable sources, who asked to not be identified, the FBI has been intensively reviewing a series of past counter-intelligence probes that were started against several high-profile neo-cons, but which were never followed up with prosecutions, to the great frustration of counter-intelligence officers, in some cases.

Some of these past investigations involve top current officials, including Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz; Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith, whose office appears to be the focus of the most recently disclosed inquiry; and Richard Perle, who resigned as Defense Policy Board (DPB) chairman last year.

All three were the subject of a lengthy investigative story by Stephen Green, published by Counterpunch in February. Green is the author of two books on US-Israeli relations, including Taking Sides: America's Secret Relations with a Militant Israel, which relies heavily on interviews with former Pentagon and counter-intelligence officials....cont'd

1. Big surprise. The FBI is notoriously antisemitic and proArab.
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 04:22 PM by Jim Sagle
This is the same FBI leadership that shut down the investigation of the 20th hijacker. Now we know why - they were covering for their Saudi masters.

4. Same FBI that rounded up all of the Arabs after 911?
Same one that busts in and provides Ashcroft all of his "terror" photo ops around the country -- later only to be dismissed for lack of evidence?

Or is that a different FBI?

5. That was for show. It was a misdirection play to make it look as if they
were protecting us.

Simultaneously they were letting top Saudis leave the country without proper vetting. You did see F911, didn't you?

By "proArab" I didn't mean "favoring Arab-Americans," I meant "promoting Saudi interests." I should have used the term proSaudi. Thanks for the correction.

6. One article I read alluded to the fact that the FBI had been infiltrated
by neocon-friendly people.

I don't think we have the whole story yet on what's going on within our intelligence agencies....but there does seem to be an internal struggle.

8. Protecting you by rounding up innocent people?
F911 was obssessed with the Secret Service and the Saudis -- not the FBI. Moore was scared of exposing the Neocons -- this has been talked about at length on these boards.

But I'm glad you corrected your mistake.

9. What part of "TO MAKE IT LOOK AS IF" they were protecting us don't you
understand? Nice way to twist a post around to say the opposite of what it ACTUALLY said.

11. Does Jim forget about Pollard? The U.S.S. Liberty?
Does he require extra-strength Advil for all that cognitive dissonance?

3. Huge, Incredible
"Some of that equipment has been sold by Israel . . ., to Russia, China and other potential US strategic rivals. Some of it has also found its way onto the black market, where terrorist groups - possibly including al-Qaeda - obtained bootlegged copies, according to these sources. "

<snip>

"In 1970, . . . an FBI wiretap authorized for the Israeli Embassy picked up Perle discussing classified information with an embassy official, while Wolfowitz was investigated in 1978 for providing a classified document on the proposed sale of a US weapons system to an Arab government to an Israeli official via an AIPAC staffer. "

Perle and Wolfowitz should be forced to resign. They never should have been hired in the first place.

10. Anti-Semite!
</profound ignorance>

It's hideous how successful the attempt to paint anti-Zionist as anti-Semitic has been. The idea that opposing fanatical Zionism is racist is as flawed and poorly-argued a debate as the allegation that the West Bank is part of Israel. All Zionists are not Jewish, and not all Jews are Zionists.

Doubly ironic, as many non-Israeli peoples in that part of the world are also Semitic in origin.

Ignoring the fact that there have been Israeli spies working against America's own interests is both woefully stupid and dangerously enabling. Naturally, the percentage of Israelis working against the U.S. is minuscule, but to assume none exist is just wishful thinking.

Fortunately, most of the world realizes that reality.

15. In case you haven't seen this
(Great post, btw.)

Here's a hint about the origin of the "criticism of Israel equals anti-Semitism" meme:

Halper: Yes. Anti-Semitism feeds on the idea that Israel is a victim. The Foreign Ministry of Israel invented a new form of anti-Semitism in the last few years called the 'New anti-Semitism,' and they then found some professors willing to give it some academic credibility. The New anti-Semitism that is now being spread all over says that any criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism, period. And it has been very effective.

The whole article is very good. I recommend it highly.

21. Criminals
The "Criminalization of the State", is when war criminals
legitimately occupy positions of authority, which enable them
to decide "who are the criminals", when in fact they are the criminals.

22. This and two related articles were posted
at DU on Tuesday night and are up as part of the current World Media Watch.

No offense, but if people would at least look at it, you'd get a lot of this stuff days earlier.

I'm about ready to stop putting it up...
