Louisiana Republican wants party-switching incumbent off ballot

Last Updated: September 1, 2004, 01:17:00 PM PDT

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Supreme Court was asked Wednesday to knock a congressman off the Nov. 2 ballot for switching at the last minute to the Republican Party.

The appeal was filed by Jock Scott, who was the Republican candidate for Congress until he was abandoned by the GOP when Rep. Rodney Alexander suddenly switched from the Democratic Party.

"Rodney Alexander should be denied the benefit of his cynical actions that violated the letter and spirit of the Louisiana election code," Scott's lawyer, Michael Johnson, argued in court papers.

The turmoil began Aug. 6, when Alexander filed to run for re-election as a Republican 15 minutes before filing deadline - and two days after he had filed as a Democrat. Furious Democrats sued to keep him off the ballot.

2. Call me old-fashioned, but I agree with Mr. Scott
Dickhead Rodney might just have shot himself in the foot by switching over after the primary deadline, and that's fine by me.

4. Court Won't Knock Alexander Off La. Ballot
By ADAM NOSSITER
Associated Press Writer
BATON ROUGE, La.
The Louisiana Supreme Court refused to knock a congressman off the Nov. 2 ballot for switching at the last minute to the Republican Party.

The justices gave no reason for their refusal to rule on the challenge to Rep. Rodney Alexander, a court spokeswoman said Thursday.

The decision marks the end of an electoral saga that began Aug. 6, when Alexander switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party.

On Monday, a lower court turned back a move by Alexander's challengers, including Republican Jock Scott, to kick him off the ballot. Scott then turned to the state's high court.
