US Navy wants more cooperation with allies, says US admiral
* ‘More interaction with allies will help our ability to operate’
PORT KLANG: The US Navy is trying to boost cooperation with allies worldwide and speed up its capability to respond to international threats, a senior officer said on Wednesday.
Seven of the Navy’s 12 carrier strike groups were deployed around the globe last month for the United States’ largest naval exercise in decades, the first-of-its-kind Summer Pulse 2004, which involved allied nations in an effort to demonstrate the Navy’s preparedness to tackle multiple, simultaneous crises in a post-Sept 11, 2001, world.
“In the security environment that we’re in today, we have to move quickly in order to be effective,” said Rear Adm. Patrick Walsh, commander of the Stennis battle group, which has been among the first training under the Navy’s new fleet response strategy that emphasises combat readiness on short notice.
“Having more opportunities to interact with our friends and allies will allow us that ability to operate more quickly,” Walsh told reporters aboard the USS John C Stennis aircraft carrier at the start of a four-day port visit to Malaysia. The predominantly Muslim Southeast Asian country has been a US ally in its global fight against terrorism.
