Miller raps Democrats calls Kerry wobbly(& TEXT / AP MENTIONS CHENEY CUTS)
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 10:10 PM by khephra
(He's the first AP article post-speech)

snip........

"George Bush wants to grab terrorists by the throat and not let them go to get a better grip," the Georgia senator said. "From John Kerry, they get a 'yes-no-maybe' bowl of mush that can only encourage our enemies and confuse our friends."

snip.....

"I have knocked on the door of this man's soul and found someone home, a God-fearing man with a good heart and a spine of tempered steel," Miller said. "The man I trust to protect my most precious possession: my family."

snip........

"For more than 20 years, on every one of the great issues of freedom and security, John Kerry has been more wrong, more weak and more wobbly than any other national figure," Miller said. "As a war protester, Kerry blamed our military. As a senator, he voted to weaken our military."

Miller, D-Ga., said Kerry had voted to cut key weapon systems. "This is a man who wants to be the commander in chief of our U.S. armed forces? U.S. forces armed with what? Spitballs?" Miller said.

In those remarks, Miller ignored the cuts in military spending that Vice President Dick Cheney pushed as defense secretary under the first President Bush. Cheney canceled the Navy F-14D Tomcat fighter and sent Congress a budget that proposed curtailing production of the B-2.

MORE....many, many, many quotes....

Text of Zell Miller's speech

Since I last stood in this spot, a whole new generation of the Miller Family has been born: Four great grandchildren.

Along with all the other members of our close-knit family, they are my and Shirley's most precious possessions.

And I know that's how you feel about your family also. Like you, I think of their future, the promises and the perils they will face.

Like you, I believe that the next four years will determine what kind of world they will grow up in.

1. Wow.
Maybe they heard us bitch about the way they said Kerry "claimed" to have won his Purple Hearts earlier today. Or maybe they are joining the suddenly repentant (according to another thread on LBN) Fox News Channel. Could the MEDIA actually wake up after this convention finished boring us all to tears?

5. I was pretty damn amazed myself
More and more, I've been seeing little paragraphs like that sneaking into stories. I hope something is changing in our favor.

4. What will Zell tell his children?
Pretend to be a Democrat (and get their support) while actually sucking up to the Repubs. Who will teach his faily morals?

3. Miller's talk infuriated me

even more than Arnold's (it takes a special talent to make me ashamed to be a Californian). These people are playing so dirty.

If we lose this one, I don't know if I can stomach it.

Zell Miller will roast in hell for what he's done. I'm glad he's retiring, or I would be giving to his republican rival in the campaign.

7. He's morphing into Tojo!
"For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag."

8. I just found a way to enjoy Zell's speech!
Put on some Wagner in the background when you read the text. It will really get you into the swing of things.

9. Some contradictions between Zell's speech
and reality:

Zell repeatedly blasted UN involvement with US foreign policy, however he cited at least two incidents in which the US worked through the UN to solve crisis: Truman's reprimand of Soviet forces in Iran and the War in Korea. Zell said these were examples of US "liberation."

Zell neglected to mention that Gen MacArthur bungled the UN's plan to maintain peace in Korea by pushing in to North Korea and massing troops near the Chinese Border. When China entered the war, it deteriorated into a quagmire that lasted 3 years.

He cited Republican Presidential Candidate Wilkie (1940) as an example of someone who put aside partisan politics to support FDR's War policies. In reality, Wilkie ran as an isolationist who promised troops "would never be sent to fight in foreign wars" and denounced Roosevelt's Destroyers for Bases Deal (w/Britain) as "dictatorial."

Zell praised Reagan for bombing Libya and using force against Kadaffi (for killing US soldiers). Is this the same Kadaffi Bush has now welcomed back to the World community?

Zell skipped over Vietnam in his little history lesson and didn't mention Reagan's embarrassing escapade into Lebanon (which resulted in more than 200 marine deaths).

Zell ecstatically praised Reagan for winning the Cold War. This begs the question, if we defeated a Major Nuclear Power that hated us without any bloodshed or force, why is war the only option for peripheral poverty-stricken states like Iraq and Afghanistan?

The list goes on and on.

10. Zell is a Republican.
Where is the link to Zell's anti-Bush speech at the Democratic Convention (?) in 1992. I hope the Democrats make an ad of it and play it over and over. I presume the rights to it belong to the Democratic Party.

12. Kerry needs to stop acting like Gomer Pyle
I hope they sweep the floor with his reputation. If the Republicans don't give Kerry a reason to start criticizing one of the worst presidents in History, then Kerry is simply not cut out to win.He needs to get fired up allready or hand over the nomination to another Democrat. Leave the nice guy tactics to the Jesus's and Ghandi's. They know how to use it.Kerry don't.He just looks like Gomer when he uses it.

Wasnt that from the 1992 State of Union? George Bush made this speech. His sec of Defense was Dick Cheney.

"Two years ago, I began planning cuts in military spending that reflected the changes of the new era. But now, this year, with imperial communism gone, that process can be accelerated. Tonight I can tell you of dramatic changes in our strategic nuclear force. These are actions we are taking on our own because they are the right thing to do. After completing 20 planes for which we have begun procurement, we will shut down further production of the B - 2 bombers. We will cancel the small ICBM program. We will cease production of new warheads for our sea-based ballistic missiles. We will stop all new production of the Peacekeeper missile. And we will not purchase any more advanced cruise missiles. "
