Republicans May Own Madison Square Garden, but Europe Is Kerry Country
Europe is Kerry country, and folks like Heike Warmuth reckon they have a chance to spoil President Bush's bid for a second term.

Even as Republicans fete the American leader at their national convention in New York, people across Europe - where Bush is often derided as reckless and ignorant - are rallying to the cause of lifting Democratic contender John Kerry to victory. "The choice of a U.S. president is not something that affects America alone," said Warmuth, a founder of "Europeans against Bush," an Austrian Web-based initiative designed to swing undecided Americans toward Kerry.

"American politics affect the whole world, whether we're talking war or peace or the international economy," said Warmuth, a member of Austria's Green Party. Not all Europeans are as active in trying to unseat Bush as Warmuth, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money earlier this summer in New York City as a Kerry campaign volunteer. But her anti-Bush inclination reflects the overwhelming sentiment throughout Western Europe, a region where politicians are often admired for eloquence, where there is deep anger at what is seen as American arrogance in Iraq and on other issues, and where contempt of Bush's perceived cowboy persona and mispronunciations runs strong.

"In no way would I vote for Bush," said Christa Eden, a secretary in Frankfurt, Germany. "He thinks that everything he does is right and tries to push it on the rest of the world."

Among the established democracies of Western Europe, America's foreign policy and pop culture pre-eminence worldwide had left many citizens resentful on a deeper level - even before the U.S. invasion of Iraq turned public sentiment overwhelmingly against Bush.

1. Problem is
Very few Europeans are allowed to vote in the US.

But it really is strange this time; never before I felt threatened, ridiculed or distressed by an US Party convention. This time it's different, the speeches are shown full-length each morning, and it is like hearing things from a strange mirror-universe. A language of fearmongering, arrogance, revisionist history and fearmongering again.

4. Ultimately though,
What Europe thinks isn't going to determine this election and comments like the ones in the article just play into the Republican's hands.

5. helps debunk a "character issue" against Kerry
People from Europe have no say in American elections and yes the bush coward's team will try to use it against Kerry. However, not too long ago they were using this as a "character issue" against Kerry. Perhaps you forgot the stink when Kerry suggested some foreign leaders were hoping he would win, and the bush team accused him of "making it up" and demanded he give names. Of course Kerry could not, so the bush team managed to make a dent in Kerry's character. The bush team is trying to win this election the same way as last time, promoting his "character" as a good guy where the others are evil liars. We know this is not consistent with reality but the more they promote the myth, the more the politically ignorant in America believe it. Every time Kerry debunks their myths and challenges them on those myths, Kerry goes up in th polls. The right wing wants this election to be about "character" again, just as in 2000, they have experience at misleading personal character attacks.

8. AP drinks the Kool-Aid, I see....
RNC talking points. Kerry is popular with Europeans. Most European nations did not help us with TWAT when we decided to roll the "Gonna SMOKE 'em OUT TWAT Road Show" into Iraq.
Thus Europe is Anti-Murkan, thus Kerry is anti-Murkan.

So can somebody tell me again WHY it is relevant how Europeans would vote in our election?

Shouldn't there be more discussion/analysis on why so many americans think "It makes no difference, and besides, I can't get time off to go vote anyway..."
