Senior Sadr aide and two other people killed in Iraq ambush
Wed Sep 1, 2:20 PM ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Gunmen ambushed and killed a senior aide to radical Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr and two other people on the road between the holy city of Najaf and Baghdad, an official from the movement and relatives said.

Sayed Bashir al-Jazaeri was killed Tuesday when his car came under fire as he was returning from Najaf, which was until recently the scene of fierce fighting between US forces and Sadr's militia, a spokesman for one of the cleric's offices said.

Jazaeri headed one of Sadr's local offices near the capital, said Sayed Naim al-Qaabi.

Jazaeri's brother Said Saleh Abu Razak al-Jazaeri said a second person was killed in the vehicle and another person was wounded. Another vehicle drove up behind and was also hit by gunfire, killing one more and wounding another of Jazairi's friends, Jazaeri's brother added.

1. Together with the attempt on Chalabi's life, I dare to speculate that...
Allawi has formed a death squad to liquidate his potential rivals on next year's elections. They obviously were not properly trained by the US, perhaps Allawi should send his death squad to Fort Benning, to the School of the Americas. SOA provides excellent training of that sort!

3. I would imagine that al Sadr understands now exactly how much he can
trust any 'negotiated' truce or settlement from Allawi's government now. The blatant incompetence of this move just astounds me. His supporters now understand that these guys can't be trusted. And I'm sure that the orders came from the White House. It's the kind of incompetent move that characterizes this whole Iraqi fiasco.
