Appalachian Trail vulnerable to new forest rules
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 07:10 AM by jukes
WASHINGTONUSA - About one of every 13 miles of the Appalachian Trail between Maine and Georgia passes through national forests where a Bush administration plan could allow clear cutting of wooded areas, an environmental group said Tuesday.

The Campaign to Protect America's Lands said it found that 163 of the popular trail's 2,174 miles fall within the 58 million acres where the Bush administration proposed lifting a ban on logging, road-building and other development.

they're raping this country for profit.

13. I guess the ruling class doesn't hike on the Appalachian Trail.
They probably have their own private trails on their country estates.

4. "Fire in the HOLE!"
Soemthing I once heard on the APT. It was quickly followed by 20 Boy Scouts hitting the deck as rock rained down on us from the explosion which occured about 50 feet from where we were hiking on the trail. Noone was checking for hikers, and they seemed completely unconcerned that we were there. The attitude was sort of a "well, you better be more careful".

Every once in a while I get the feeling we're fighting a losing battle. Once peak oil hits and passes it's only going to get worse too. Without trying to sound too apocalyptic the "End Times" are definately coming soon. Prehaps it would be better to say the "End Game". I don't see the world ending necessarily, and we can still win in the end, but damn it's becoming a much harder battle. It dosen't help that we really don't have any leaders in the federal gov't. Nor are we likely to get any either.

8. NC & Tenn
both have gorgeous sections of trail. clear cutting will ultimately destroy the entire trail.

another sacrifice on the alter of greed.

11. Well, this sucks
I live in Georgia and hiking the trail is one of my lifelong ambitions. It just won't be the same hiking through land levelled for suburbs and mini-marts.

12. This just can't happen
I'm upset enough about the west and northwest, but goddammit, there isn't anything to cut in the east. There's so little recreation as it is. They actually get excited to find 20 acres of old trees to call an Old Growth Stand. What the hell happened to their goddamned "tree farms"? I hope they all burn in hell.
