Edwards Assails GOP Speakers on Issues
NEW YORK -- Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards fought back Thursday after a torrent of Republican criticism of John Kerry, saying GOP convention speakers used angry rhetoric to attack his running mate but ignored key issues like jobs and health care.

snip.......

On ABC's "Good Morning America," Edwards said the attacks were "completely over the top" and made him mad.

About claims that Kerry's record on defense issues is weak, he said, "It's just false, it's not true."

"What we heard from the Republicans in that hall last night was an enormous amount of anger," Edwards said on CBS's "The Early Show." "If you got up and went to the refrigerator to get a Diet Coke, you would have missed any discussion of what they're going to do about health care, what they're going to do about jobs, what they plan to do about this mess in Iraq."

4. Charlie Gibson (ABC) begged Edwards to say he was angry
Gibson tried turning it around on Edwards, he kept asking Edwards "didn't it make you angry?" Ignoring Edwards's answers, just trying to get the soundbite he wanted.

8. He's a fat blob who probably hasn't had sex that he hasn't paid for . . .
since he was a teen. That would make me angry. I don't know where any of them get the anger they carry day to day.

7. Check The Language In The Title... "Assails" (Propaganda Alert)
Pretty dramatic word choice, don't you think? Here is a definition form Merriam-Webster

One entry found for assail.

Main Entry: as·sail
Pronunciation: &-'sA(&)l
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French asaillir, from (assumed) Vulgar Latin assalire, alteration of Latin assilire to leap upon, from ad- + salire to leap -- more at SALLY
: to attack violently with blows or words
synonym see ATTACK
- as·sail·able /-'sA-l&-b&l/ adjective
- as·sail·ant /-'sA-l&nt/ noun

Now take a look at the story on their home page, it is titled

"Cheney, Miller rap Kerry"

Well that's not to bad huh. They were just rapping Kerry. Here is a definition.

Main Entry: 2rap
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): rapped; rap·ping
transitive senses
1 : to strike with a sharp blow
2 : to utter suddenly and forcibly
3 : to cause to be or come by raps <rap the meeting to order>
4 : to criticize sharply
intransitive senses
1 : to strike a quick sharp blow
2 : to make a short sharp sound

Pure fucking propaganda. Up is down black is white. How in the hell will we ever be able to overcome this apparatus that is arrayed against us? All of the LTTE, protests and boycotts in the world don't seem to be helping.

10. That kind of subliminal propaganda is incessant in the media.
No-so-subtle choice of verbs and modifiers (adverbs and adjectives) is a plague in all forms of media, virtually always portraying liberals as some kind of extreme while protraying establishment neoconservatives as 'mainstream.' It was blatant and obvious during the Democratic primary season. Kucinich never got a balanced treatment - not even as close to balanced as Sharpton.

The media exploits those whose critical thinking skills are weak to nonexistent - which, unfortunately, is about 80% of the US adult population. When I went to grade school, our civics courses dealt in recognizing propaganda and bias in the press. We'd go through daily newspapers and identify exploitative and biased language. It wasn't the best of courses, but I seriously doubt such coursework could be found today except in AP courses with the most diligent of teachers.

It's a perfect example of what we are talking about. Funny you should mention civics, because I was thinking about that last night after watching Luntz's "focus group". I thought that it was, pretty much a universal requirement for graduation, but after watching that I just can't help but think they score it with a wink and nod. kind of like gym. When was the last time you heard of someone failing to graduate because they flunked gym?
