Iraq North Oil Pipeline Blazes
Iraq North Oil Pipeline Blazes

By Khaled Yacoub Oweis

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites) on Friday struggled to cope with the fiercest attack yet on its northern oil export network, while exports from southern terminals touched post-war highs after recovering from sabotage, officials said.

Fire was still raging on the northern pipeline after it was attacked on Thursday in the Riad area, around 70 km (45 miles) southwest of the oil center of Kirkuk.

"This is the strongest assault on the northern pipeline we have seen. The fire could be put out in two days if we manage to erect sand walls to isolate it," said Ahmad al-Ubaidi, a senior North Oil Company security official.

Firefighters at the scene withdrew, saying nothing could be done to put out the flames for now. The road between Kirkuk and the Baiji refinery was still cut, witnesses said.

Fire Rages Near Iraq Oil Fields

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Firefighters fought a massive oil pipeline fire in northern Iraq (news - web sites) on Friday, after insurgents detonated explosives in what authorities described as one of the worst sabotage attacks in the region since the U.S.-led invasion.

The explosion Thursday on the line extending from fields southwest of Kirkuk to the oil refinery in Beiji set off a fire that pumped balls of fire and black smoke over the area. The fire continued to rage late Friday evening.

Officials at the state-run Northern Oil Co. decided to temporarily stop pumping oil to the Turkish Mediterranean port of Ceyhan, fearing the fire could spread to the key pipeline running to the port, said Maj. Gen. Anwar Mohammed Amin of the Iraqi National Guard in Kirkuk.

"The pumping to the Ceyhan port has stopped because of this act of sabotage," Amin said. "It is the biggest sabotage operation on the oil installations in Kirkuk since the invasion."
