56. That will improve his prognosis and recovery. It's a good thing.
Arteriosclerosis occurs over periods of years and decades. No diet was going to correct the damage that had already occurred, but he is in good shape and should do well.

I refuse to believe otherwise and he is in my thoughts. Take care, Big Dog and Hillary. As always, we are rooting for you! (and we need you now, more than ever!0

101. Well...
...frankly, that's probably what this is about.

I quit eating fast food years ago for this very reason. My cousin had the luck to marry herself a heart surgeon, and he says he'll need an entire ward to take care of us when that special time comes.

Hopefully they'll be able to fix mine with angioplasty but I'm not betting on it. And also...it's much easier to do major surgery on someone who keeps their weight in line and doesn't have diabetes or high blood pressure.

A word to the wise, friends.

And, South Beach is not like Atkins. It is a balanced diet which focuses on 'healthier' carbs, rather than strictly no/low carbs and healthy fats, proteins, etc. His diet did NOT cause this, but rather 30-40 years of UNHEALTHY diet, stress, genetics, etc. DID.

Though he always has had bitter detractors, Clinton's popularity remains high, according to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll. As he started a book tour in June, the poll showed his retrospective job approval rating at 62 percent, topping its average during his presidency. :D

. . .but close.

I'd say having one of the best hospitals on the planet and a team dedicated to you would be the "Best of care". . .and the sitting President gets that from Bethesda Naval Hospital (I know, I'm quibbling)

But I'd say he's likely getting a standard only a fractional notch below that. . . .

84. Let's hope so. . .
. . .had a friend, Marathon runner, great shape, and still had a massive heart attack: only the fact that they lived practically next door to the ER is the only reason he's alive today.

Also read, while searching for news, something about he had an angioplasty on or about the 25th, and now has a more serious blockage, requiring quadruple bypass.

Outlook is good, I'd say, but there's always some risk, and after the recent angioplasty, more chest pains are a little ominous. . .

NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton has been admitted to a New York hospital, a source confirmed to FOX News.

The president is undergoing heart bypass surgery after a source confirmed that Clinton was admitted after encountering a blockage in his arteries.

63. You can't get past genetics
David Letterman's dad died of a heart attack in his 50's. Dave was a lean mean jogging machine, but his arteries were still a mess. That's why he was diligent about getting his heart checked and that's why he needed a 5X bypass when he went in for a routine angiogram. You can do everything with diet, exercise and every medication to lower cholesterol. Some people arteries just clog up, PERIOD. Tennis great Arthur Ashe was the same way. He had to have his first bypass operation when he was 36 and had to have another heart surgery when he was 40!

83. Genetics hasten the damage.. but didn't Dave smoke back then?
Genetics play a part. BUT, there is no quibbling with the fact that smoking, drinking, eating hydrogolized fats (which is in junk foods), and red meat, will cause damage in anyone.. regardless of their genetic make-up. To dismiss those facts with anecdotes, while true, does not cancel out the real risks. It's like the arguments against wearing seatbelts because a small number of people have been trapped in their cars by them in an accident. Better to wear the seatbelt, but have a tool to cut it handy. And better to live a healthy lifestyle, and avoid heart attack and disease, regardless of your genetics. My father had his first heart attack at 33, then died at 54 from a heart attack. He ate terribly, smoked and drank. Not one of my relatives have died from heart related causes who did not either smoke or drink. All the others have lived, or are living long happy lives. While genetics makes you more susceptible to problems, your lifestyle can really, really make a difference. It's not about preaching to everyone to live healthy.. but rather it's hoping your loved ones make good choices so they'll be around for a long, long time.

It's no secret that Bill Clinton loved the junky foods.. and that his weight has moved up and down the scale repeatedly. Losing and gaining even small amounts of weight is extremely dangerous, too.

I just hope he's okay.

117. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT advocating an unhealthy lifestyle
I'm just saying that you can't rest easy even if you do EVERYTHING in your power, via healthy diet, exercise, no smoking or drinking, etc. I had a cousin by marriage who was a nurse-midwife. She ate healthy, kept her weight under control, exercised regularly, etc. She did everything the right way to protect her heart, but bad tickers just ran in her family. They went in to do bypass surgery when she was 63 and she didn't make it through the surgery. It was just all genetics. Granted, she probably added years to her life, but still she died way too young. She was a great lady, and oddly enough she and my cousin were missionaries in Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran back in the 60's and 70's.

...but many hospitals won't do them.

Cleveland Clinic does them for sure, but they do a lot of things other places won't do.

I like to say they're the Navy Seals of thoracic surgery.

Johns Hopkins, Mayo and (believe it or not) Baylor medical center in Dallas are all very good choices.

Best wishes and thoughts to President Clinton.

On diet - if you are at risk, get a c-reactive protein test!
The cholesterol won't do any damage if the arteries are not "sticky".
The cholesterol sticks to the arteries when they are inflamed.
The CRP test will tell you if your arteries are sticky.
Half of all heart attacks occur in people with normal cholesterol levels.

96. CRP is okay, but
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 12:06 PM by comsymp
even the ultra-sensitive (Cardio) CRP can't determine the source of the inflammation, therefore it's virtually useless for anyone with any chronic inflammation (arthritis, pregnancy, etc.) or for anyone who has recently recovered from colds, flu, etc.

Personally, I'd suggest a Cardio (ultra-sensitive) CRP in conjunction with a VAP and Homocysteine. Otherwise, I'd have the VAP done first, if cost is a factor, as it directly measures the level of LDL subparticles.

ON EDIT: Prayers for him and the family, of course.

111. Yes...
...they do, but his diet sure doesn't help.

I have a body type that's fairly close to his, in addition to a family history of heart disease. My wife and I work less than a mile from each other, carpool each day and go to lunch together. We do this because I have ZERO willpower when it comes to food and she's insistent that keep off the weight I lost over the past year.

Bottom line...I go to lunch with a guard, and it works. Otherwise, I'll just blow up like a balloon. Lots of guys are like this.

On the positive side, I never smoked or drank. That helps but considering my genetics there's still reason to worry.

They'll probably put him on Zocor or Lipitor...Zocor is the better one and more expensive. Statin drugs are bad for the liver...gotta keep an eye on that man.

The president is undergoing heart bypass surgery after a source confirmed that Clinton was admitted after encountering a blockage in his arteries.

Clinton was one of the youngest presidents to have entered office after being elected in 1992. In July, he appeared at the Democratic National Convention, where he gave a rousing speech to rally support for John Kerry.

Sources gave no indication that Clinton would suffer any damage from what has become a frequently-performed procedure.

conflicting reports.

A Democratic Party official told Reuters that Clinton had checked into the hospital with "chest pains." The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, could not confirm that Clinton would undergo bypass surgery.

CNN quoted a source close to the former president as saying the surgery could take place as early as Saturday.

Clinton, the 42nd U.S. president, promised at the Democratic convention in July to be a "foot soldier" in John Kerry's race against Republican President Bush.

70. Details from CBS
(CBS) CBS News has learned that former President Clinton was hospitalized on Friday in New York City after complaining of chest pains.

A source close to Mr. Clinton tells CBS News that Mr. Clinton complained of chest pains Thursday night and was taken to a hospital near his home in Chappaqua, N.Y. Doctors, according to our source, found a blockage. Mr. Clinton is now in the New York Presbyterian hospital in Manhattan.

The New York Times reports on its web site that Mr. Clinton had a heart attack. CBS News has not independently confirmed that.

Mr. Clinton's wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., was attending an event in Syracuse, N.Y., when the news of her husband's condition broke. ...MORE....

Many of them are hoping for the best for Mr. Clinton

but some of them questioned the timing of his medical crisis, and one said that they hope he pulls through because the coverage of his funeral would be too much.

I guess they figure he faked a heart attack to take attention from Bush's convention

90. Multiple lesions, routine surgery tomorrow. ABC link
The severity of Clinton's coronary problem was discovered after tests this morning at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, N.Y., a source said. His coronary results were not favorable and he was found to have multiple lesions, the source added.

A senior source with the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said the campaign is aware of Clinton's hospital trip this morning, but that there is contradictory information about the diagnosis and what's next. Campaign officials are said to be closely monitoring the situation.

ABC News' medical editor Dr. Tim Johnson said that without more information, it's hard to know how serious Clinton's situation is, but that he very well could enjoy a healthy recovery.

"It's a very routine operation," Johnson said. "He has in his favor that he's a relatively young man and in other ways appears to be in relatively good health."

95. This Is...
...a very safe surgery nowadays. It's been said that getting a heart bypass at Cleveland Clinic is like visiting the car wash...and it's a good analogy.

My uncle was told by Hershey/Penn State medical center that he needed a five-way and they couldn't do it, sent him home to die, etc. Cleveland Clinic did the work, kept him for two weeks to resolve an irregular heartbeat and he's good as new today.

I'm sure Clinton has the best doctors and the best hospitals available to him - but I'll also bet that his diet will change after this is over.

I love hamburgers and BBQ, too - but they'll kill ya.

The president and his doctor were scheduling the bypass for later, the official said. The official did know the percentage of blockage.

In Little Rock, Ark., Clinton's mother-in-law, Dorothy Rodham, said Clinton had called her after he was struck with chest pains and sounded good.

"He sounded wonderful as usual and very upbeat as he always is," she said. "I just told him how much I love him."

Mrs. Rodham said she didn't know if he was in the hospital when he called.
