Back from a controversial week in New York, Keyes comes out swinging
snip........

"His (Obama) record is the record of a hard-line, academic, Marxist socialist, who wants a government takeover of health care, who voted for infanticide because of his position on taking innocent human life and so forth," Keyes said.

Asked for examples that would support that claim concerning Obama's record, Keyes cited legislation introduced by the South Side senator that would have guaranteed all Illinois residents access to adequate health care.

He said another example was Obama's support for gun-control measures, adding that "confiscation of firearms was one of the elements of the Marxist agenda."

snip.....

"Was I supposed to say, 'Oh, well, this applies to everyone but the vice president's daughter because we give special privileges to Republican children?"

Really, they should have stayed loyal to Ryan even in spite of the controversy. It might've died down by now. Or picked Oberweis. Keyes is nothing but an albatross for them.

15. Keyes Comes Out Swinging
Oh, I can see how Keyes calling gun laws Marxist will just bring out thousands of dedicated voters...against him. To support Marxist law enforcement officers across the country who also back gun laws. Keyes just guaranteed a victory for Obama!

23. uh, that victoory was guaranteed a long time ago
Even before Ryan had the court documents unsealed, Obama was at 50% to 38%. The only challenge to Barack now is if he can reach 75%.

16. What percentage of the voting public in
Illinois is going to cast ballots for this nutjob? I suspect he'll hurt the chimp, too, because some repukes who don't want to vote for Obama will simply stay home.

In the end I think Obama will take 70 - 75% of the vote and Keyes will crawl back into his dungeon.

17. The Illinois GOP continues the downward spiral!
Oh my, I have got to admit it, I am loving this one. Watching Keyes has been one of the funniest things I've ever seen here in Illinois politics. For those of us living here, politics really is more of a blood sport than anything else. Keyes has provided that much needed comedic break. Kinda like the rodeo clowns...

It is a blood sport here.
Sometimes I think that is why our professional sports teams suck so often. Politics is the REAL sport in Illinois.

I live near Rockford. Syverson is a right wing prick from there who is one of Keyes' principal sponsors. I hope the electorate here skewers him over Keyes.

25. We've definitely needed some comedic relief -- Keyes
is providing it. Give him the littlest bit of credit, he speaks for the crazy shit he believes in and doesn't attempt to put a different face on it. This is the gay hating party and he's absolutely proud of being a part of it.

19. Illinois GOP lukewarm on Keyes in duel with Obama
By Yvonne Abraham, Globe Staff | September 1, 2004

<snip>
On the other side of the room, State Treasurer and party chair Judy Baar Topinka, a redheaded tornado of a woman, was answering questions of her own. A moderate Republican, she is worried that social conservatives threaten to undo her party. "The party, to be successful, has to be center-right, not right-right," she was saying. Topinka's inquisitors pressed in on her, trying to get her to say whether she was directing that comment at the conservative Senate candidate.
<snip>

Victory does not seem to be in the cards for Keyes, however: A recent Chicago Tribune poll indicated Obama had a huge lead -- 65 percent to 24 percent.
<snip>

But in Illinois, Keyes has stepped forward into another kind of civil war. He is not working closely with Topinka's wing of the party. And yesterday, he introduced himself to most of the delegates for the first time. Some were cool to him. Others, like first-time delegate L. Fred Welch, were happy to meet Keyes.
<snip>

Before the breakfast announcements began, Keyes and his entourage had left. In her effusive, praise-laden pep speech to delegates about the November election, Topinka did not mention him once.

22. I actually think he's right (sort of)
I actually think he's right---at least about not being able to back away from his wild theoretical condemnation of all gay people just because they named a specific individual whose father happens to be the Republican Vice President.

Of course, his blanket "selfish hedonists" statement is utterly loathesome anyway.

But then again, so is the GOP platform.

when he says that his position is the same as the GOP's. He's the only one willing to actually say it like the homophobia that it is.

26. It is a huge mistake to marginalize Keyes as a wacky extremist.
This is exactly what moderate republicans who basically are decent people do to justify their membership and support of the republican party. Millions of republicans say Keyes is in no way typical of the republican party and his hate filled rants do not represent many other republicans. They gently mock him as an extremist with no influence or power in the party.

But in fact Keyes' views are held by even more millions of republicans who make up a large percentage of the republican base. Those republicans who completely agree with Keyes are the winning difference for the republican party and they exercise a great deal of control, almost total control, over the party. The moderate republicans tolerate it because they think republicans like Keyes are amusing in a quaint way. If either the moderate republicans or the Keyes republicans left the party it would no longer be competitive in many States and nationally.
