NEW YORK The Associated Press changed "boos" to "ooohhs" Friday afternoon in reporting on President George Bush's first statement to supporters on the heart ailment that has befallen former President Bill Clinton.

In a dispatch sent to subscribers in early afternoon, the AP reported that when Bush, at a campaign rally in West Allis, Wisconsin, told the crowd that he wished to send Clinton his "best wishes for a swift and speedy recovery," the audience "of thousands booed. Bush did nothing to stop them."

The new version moved on the wire Friday described the same incident this way, after relating Bush's remarks: "The crowd reacted with applause and with some 'ooohs,' apparently surprised by the news that Clinton was ill."

A Knight Ridder/Tribune (KRT) report put it this way: "Some in Bush's audience booed when he wished Clinton well...." The AFP wire report declared that after Bush's statement "thousands of boisterous supporters clapped respectfully."

9. Not for this.......of course they ARE heartless hate-mongerers......
But I think they were too surprised by the news to have a chance to let their natural tendencies out before they caught sight of the huge "applause" sign flashing in their faces.

3. Two Things
1. dupe

2. If you'd listened to or watched the tape for yourself, you'd know that the revision IS correct. Those were not boos. When a crowd boos, their vocal pitch drops down a few registers, not up the way this crowd does.

3. There may have been some boos, but they are not audible on the available media. Who knows? It could have been like the Dean scream; audible to some, not to others.

7. It isn't a dupe
It's from Editor & Publisher reporting on what the Associated Press did -- not some bullshit from Drudge.

8. I heard no boos.
I saw this clip last night, and when SmirkBoy announced Clinton's problem there was a collective, shocked "Oooh!"

* immediatly went right into his "best wishes" and the people directly behind him clapped.

I'll gladly attribute all kinds of base and ugly reactions to the Republicans Ñ but this just wasn't one of them.

Sometimes, the hysteria on this board annoys me.

10. If it annoys you....
The clip was about a textual change in an AP story (which I read when it was first released). One would assume that the reporter was there and did not hear it on television where sound can be... let's say re-emphasized."

No one here made that up.

11. Reminds me of a Simpson's episode when they booed Mr. Burns.

Smithers said, "They aren't booing, sir. They're saying, "Boo-urns, Boo-urns!"

13. Well, I was saying Boo-urns.
:) But, seriously, the Republican delegates are too well-trained to boo without permission.

16. I've known a lot of people and their type who attend Bush rallies.
The mere mention of Bill Clinton works them up in a lather of hate and contempt. To anyone who really believes those were "ooohs" and not "boos," you can call me at BR-549. I have some lunar swampland to sell you. Real cheap!

17. I think the audio was manipulated for damage control...
I saw the breaking clip on ABC no boos or oohs--
delicate, respectful applause is what I heard.

It's good they are playing defense again.
