BAGHDAD (AFP) - Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s former deputy Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri, who was the most wanted official from the former regime, has been arrested on the outskirts of Tikrit, an Iraqi defence ministry official said.

"Izzat Ibrahim al-Duri was arrested on the outskirts of Tikrit," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The capture was announced after police in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit, north of Baghdad, said Saturday that US forces had new leads in their hunt for the former vice-president.

A police officer had told AFP the search had focused on neighbourhoods east of Tikrit following information Ibrahim recently had a blood transfusion in a local clinic.

5. U.S. has no information on the report...
<snip>
U.S. Maj. Neil O'Brien of the Tikrit-based 1st Infranty Division, however, said he could not confirm the report. A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Baghdad also said he had no information about an arrest.

Seems like propaganda to me. These are the same people that said Iraqi police were in the mosque.

13. Now we know it was lie...
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military in Iraq (news - web sites) said on Sunday that it did not have custody of Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, a top fugitive Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) aide who the Iraqi defense ministry earlier said had been captured.

"Multi-National Force Iraq confirms that we do not have Izzat Ibrahim al- Douri in custody," a military statement said.

Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 09:42 AM by jmcgowanjm
Urgent memo from the Iraqi Patriotic Alliance (Anti-occupation coalition)
spokesman Awni al-Qalamji:

Today American forces arrested Mr. Abdel-
Jabbar al-Kubeisi in
Baghdad, after surrounding his residence using four
'Hummers' and two
helicopters. He was taken very quickly to an
unknown destination.

I don't know who this guy is. Confused w/
Al Brahimi?

I'll wait for Resistance report before
I'm convinced.

And wonder why he wasn't given the Saddam sons
treatment?

22. that is a more important capture..
`Abd al-Jabbar al-Kubaysi is actually an important figure. A friend of mine was actually able to meet him at an event in Vienna. For years he's been a part of coordinating proper opposition inside Iraq, not as part of the CIA bullshit pack of quislings. As the runup to the criminal invasion became nearer, they then turned the Iraqi opposition to the other front, first among those providing steadfast resistance to the invasion and occupation.

The coordination known as the Iraqi Patriotic Alliance was a joint effort between:
* opposition wing of the Arab Baath Socialist Party,
* Socialist Unity Party (of Nasserite orientation),
* Arab Labour Party (Arab Nationalist - Marxist),
* Arab Socialist Movement (remainder of the Arab Nationalists' Movement, mostly inclined to Marxism),
* Kurdish Islamic Army,
* Kurdistan Peace Party (an elite of Kurdish intellectuals and journalists),
* patriotic current in the Iraqi Communist Party,
* independent political and intellectual figures

The act of abducting him, carried out by illegal invaders, ia a criminal act that must be reversed.

15. Iraq Government Says Captures Most-Wanted Saddam Aide
Sun Sep 5, 2004 11:01 AM ET

By Waleed Ibrahim and Tom Perry

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi and U.S. forces arrested a man believed to be the most-wanted Saddam Hussein aide still on the run in a bloody raid in which 70 of his supporters were killed and 80 captured, the Iraqi government said on Sunday.

But the U.S. military cast doubt on the report, saying Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri -- who was sixth on the U.S. list of the 55 most-wanted members of Saddam's regime and had a $10 million price on his head -- was not in its custody.

"Multi-National Force Iraq confirms that we do not have Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri in custody," a military statement said.

18. Update: Iraq Govt. Seeks to Confirm if Saddam Aide Held
good lord this is beyond bizarro....

<snip>
The Defense Ministry said Izzat Ibrahim al Douri, who was sixth on a U.S. list of the 55 most wanted members of Saddam's administration and had a $10 million price on his head, was arrested in Tikrit, Saddam's former powerbase north of Baghdad.

Two Iraqi ministers said Ibrahim was caught in a bloody raid in which 150 of his supporters tried to prevent his capture.

Iraqi Minister of State Wael Abdul al-Latif said it was "75 to 90 percent certain" the captured man was Ibrahim, adding that 70 of the former official's supporters were killed and 80 were captured when they tried to thwart his arrest.

He said Arabs from outside Iraq had been among those protecting Ibrahim, who was suffering from leukemia.

21. If there is a ten million dollar bounty on his head
Plenty of people would have ten million good reasons to pretend they have captured him. Although, I doubt they would give a plugged nickel for any of the former regime's personnel by now.

24. of marginal importance at best
True, al-Durri nominally commands the pro-Saddam Baathist resistance in the central front, but this accounts for maybe 1/2 of the Baathist tendency itself in Iraq, and maybe a whopping 3-4% of the Resistance as a whole.

The cowards and collaborators who betrayed him to the invaders should be ashamed of themselves. That aside, this is nothing to cry or smile about (whichever potential response, depending on one's leanings).
