“THE RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE

A Trailing Kerry Has Been There, Won That

By Mark Z. Barabak, Times Staff Writer

BOSTON — John F. Kerry has been here before.

Turning into the final eight weeks of the presidential campaign, the Democratic nominee faces doubts within his party and pundits increasingly skeptical of his chances against a resurgent President Bush, who seems to have momentum heading his way.
It is reminiscent of the Democratic race last winter, when Kerry was counted among the living dead and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean was romping to the Democratic nomination — or so it appeared.

But there is another contest that may be instructive…

2. Take your pick Senator
"The key to understanding Kerry is that he fights best from an underdog status," said Lou DiNatale, a University of Massachusetts pollster who has followed Kerry's career for years. "You can't underestimate his ability to find the crease, the cutting issue, at the right moment and ride it all the way to election day."

There is a smorgasbord of cutting issues (bad policies) from which to choose.

4. "anything to win"
To Rob Gray, Weld's campaign spokesman, the details were immaterial. Kerry's decision to blow through the spending ceiling was decisive, he said, and showed that Kerry would "do anything to win."

To Democrats, ravenous to defeat Bush on Nov. 2, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

5. I witnessed "bad cop" Kerry in Iowa
He can turn vicious on a dime. In fact, his smear campaign against Dean was borderline sickening in the final weeks, which led to Dean's alledged media meltdown. Frankly, Dean was a modicum of self control considering the vicious rhetoric that Kerry (and Gephardt) were throwing at him. I suspect that sometime later this month, "bad cop" Kerry is going to be unleashed and we're all going to have to cover our eyes and ears. The Bush campaign knows it's coming and that's why they've released the hounds so early. It's their only defense.

6. Unfortunately, that is what you have to do in todays politics to
win. And if that is what Kerry is capable of, then we clearly nominated the right guy.

"The Bush campaign knows it's coming and that's why they've released the hounds so early. It's their only defense."

I have never seen anything as vicious as what the Bush campaign did to McCain. They clearly have no morals and no regard for the truth.

"bad cop Kerry"??? Is this the new talking point of the week?
