Thousands of get-well wishes pour in for Clinton

BY PEGGY HARRIS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

If former President Clinton is still feeling "a little scared" since he was hospitalized for heart problems, reading the thousands of get-well messages sent to him online should help put his mind at ease.

Ordinary people from around the world sent more than 20,000 e-mail messages to the former president in the few days since doctors discovered blockages in Clinton’s heart arteries and ordered bypass surgery. They sent praise, gratitude, prayers and advice via the Clinton Presidential Center Web site.

"I am an old lady from Bangladesh. I hardly know about the world politics," one woman wrote in wishing Clinton a successful surgery. "I wish you a quick recovery on behalf of all the people I know who also love you and pray for you."

Another sent him a poem; another a Bible verse. Many who had had heart surgery reassured him that he would be OK....

Skip Rutherford, president of the Clinton foundation that is building the center in Little Rock, said that the Web site could handle the thousands of messages sent in the three-day period and that staff members were saving every one of them. The site invites visitors to send a get-well wish to Clinton and says the former president appreciates all the support....

(The local paper added a local note, in the form of an e-mail from Canada: ""I want you to know that everyone I have talked to in Canada about your medical condition today was saddened, concerned and yet very optimistic that you would make a full recovery...As I helped my American friends work on the Wes Clark campaign, I was hoping that he would win so there could be another fabulous U.S. president from Arkansas...Get well soon! We need you!!")
