President Schwarzenegger? Some GOP delegates liked the idea
There may be only one thing more improbable than the idea of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming president -- and that's the idea that he wouldn't want to try.

Schwarzenegger could only run for president if the Constitution were amended -- a complicated and rarely achieved process -- to allow foreign-born citizens to serve in the White House.

But Schwarzenegger has devoted his life to doing what people told him couldn't be done, from bodybuilding to acting to becoming governor. The more impossible it seems, the more he seems to want it.

As he recently told The New Yorker magazine: "The fun part about it is to do something when everyone says it can't be done . . . This is exactly what my life always has been about."

3. A Breaking News post isn't usually considered a dupe if it's in GD or GD04
Edited on Mon Sep-06-04 12:49 PM by khephra
At least most of the time. Some BN readers never enter GD or GD2004 for certain reasons (eg. infighting).

19. Also, this section moves so fast a lot of people never have the time!
It's really an important source for seeing all the stories first, some before they even show up on the radio news or tv cable news.

Some people get addicted, speaking personally! :)

If I'm going to spend time catching up, I prefer to spend the time on actual articles rather than sifting through a lot of infighting threads. ;-)

13. This was predicted 20 years ago.
I'll never forget the horror when I heard it on a local radio station. If I could only remember the details. Some astute dj was discussing it. I mean, these are not new ideas. This is a long term agenda the republicans have. You can imagine my surprise when this moron showed his face as MY governor. I find it more than frightening. I'm not affraid of him, as much as those who don't say anything. No different than those who didn't stop Hitler. People are so stupid.

14. I don't know, but learning to "clean and jerk" isn't really impossible
or unobtainable as a dream.

succeeding in movies heavily-laden in special-effects and lacking in acting ability is not an impossible goal to reach.

The Constitution will not be successfully changed to allow a 2nd Austrian to rule a superpower. One Hitler was enough for our planet's lifetime.

The GOP seems to want to bend, spindle, and mutilate it unless it makes women equal under the law, and then that sacred instrument cannot be tampered with.

...if Americans fall for this crap they are really hopeless.
The idiot GOP is proposing a candidate whose only "qualification" is that he is well-known--as an imaginary super-hero action figure. The disdain these a-holes feel for the office of president, as well as for the American public, couldn't be any greater. Hey, why not just run a cardboard cutout of Mickey Mouse? The effect is the same--figurehead, front man for your murderous secret treacheries.

22. Don't laugh. Arnold's good pal Orin Hatch is working on the amendment...
ORIN HATCH BOOSTING SCHWARZENEGGER FOR PRESIDENT

And, not coincidentally, Arnold has campaigned for Hatch in Utah.
http://prorev.com/arnold.htm
CHRISTOPHER SMITH, SALT LAKE TRIBUNE - Sen. Orin Hatch says Arnold Schwarzenegger should not be judged on past improper advances towards women but as the devoted husband he is today, adding that the foreign-born GOP candidate for California governor also should have the opportunity to run for president under a constitutional amendment Hatch is pushing.
<snip>
. . . Hatch has introduced a resolution to amend the Constitution's ban on non-American-born presidents by allowing people who have been U.S. citizens for at least 20 years to be elected to the White House. While the measure was not introduced with Schwarzenegger in mind, Hatch said the Austrian-born superstar would be a perfect example of why the constitutional amendment is needed. "If Arnold Schwarzenegger turns out to be the greatest governor of California, which I hope he will, if he turns out to be a tremendous leader and he proves to everybody in this country that he's totally dedicated to this country as an American . . . we would be wrong not to give him that opportunity," said Hatch.

23. Can't be done
It takes too long to amend the Constitution, Hatch will be pushing up daisies before it even gets out to the states. It took YEARS for the ERA amendment to make it through all the states, and even it didn't get enough votes to make it. I'm not too worried about AAhnold being president any time soon.

24. ERA:
http://www.equalrightsamendment.org/strategy.htm

"Three-state Strategy" Keeps Existing Ratifications Alive
ERA SupporterThe National Council of Women's Organizations supports both the reintroduction of the Equal Rights Amendment in Congress and the "three-state strategy" for ERA ratification.

The three-state strategy is based on the legal analysis in "The Equal Rights Amendment: Why the ERA Remains Legally Viable and Properly Before the States," by Allison Held, Sheryl Herndon, and Danielle Stager, published in the Spring 1997 issue of William & Mary Journal of Women and the Law.

This strategy is based on the fact that the "Madison Amendment," concerning Congressional pay raises, became the 27th Amendment to the Constitution in 1992, after a ratification period of 203 years. Therefore, the ERA's ratification period of less than three decades would surely meet the "reasonable" and "sufficiently contemporaneous" standards required by several Supreme Court decisions. Time limits were not imposed on amendments before 1917 (beginning with the 18th Amendment, Prohibition), and the 19th Amendment affirming women's right to vote had no time limit. Congress demonstrated its belief that it may alter a time limit in a proposing clause by extending the original ERA deadline. Thus it is likely that Congress has the power to adjust or repeal the previous time limit on the ERA, determine whether state ratifications subsequent to 1982 are valid, and accept the ERA as part of the Constitution after three more states ratify. The 35 existing ratifications should stand because precedent regarding state rescissions shows that such actions have not been accepted as valid.

An analysis by the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress bears on the question.

H.Res.38 (Rep. Robert Andrews, NJ, chief sponsor) in the current Congress promotes this strategy by stipulating that the House of Representatives shall take any necessary legislative action to verify ERA's ratification when an additional three states ratify. The NCWO supports this bill and urges groups and individuals to work for more co-sponsors and passage. Status of the bill can be followed by clicking here.

The NCWO also encourages the introduction and passage of ERA ratification bills in the 15 states which have not yet ratified it. For an update on the status of ratification bills in the unratified states, click here.
