Michael Moore to pursue best picture Oscar
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/local/states/california/peninsula/9595662.htm?1c

ANTHONY BREZNICAN

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Michael Moore says he won't submit "Fahrenheit 9/11" for consideration as best documentary at this year's Academy Awards. Instead, he's going for the bigger prize of best picture.

Moore's critically acclaimed film slams President Bush's war on terror as ill-advised and corrupt. The movie has cheered Democrats but enraged the president's supporters, who booed Moore when he visited the Republican National Convention last week.

"For me the real Oscar would be Bush's defeat on Nov. 2," Moore told The Associated Press on Monday during a phone interview from New York.

3. I wish him well, but I don't think he'll win
Controversial movies rarely win the big prize at the Oscars. Moore's ego has gotten the best of him. Just go for Best Documentary, which he'd win easily.

4. I agree..... If it did win, it would really cement the impression
by some that its accolades were purely the result of political ideology by those voting.

Go for best documentary 2 x in a row-- that's quite noteable in and of itself.

5. I guess you didn't read the article. It is often helpful
to read rather than just letting loose with character attacks.
------
So many documentaries - such as the gonzo fast-food satire "Super Size Me," and the sober look at Arab television new in "Control Room" - have made the rounds in theaters recently that Moore, who won the best doc Oscar for "Bowling for Columbine," said he wanted to give others a chance at the honor.

"It's not that I want to be disrespectful and say I don't ever want to win a (documentary) Oscar again," Moore said. "This just seems like the right thing to do. ... I don't want to take away from the other nominees and the attention that they richly deserve."

8. You have to register to read it
It is a pet peeve of mine that artlcles get posted from newspapers that require registration to read them. Some of us are tired of getting spam so we don't bother.

11. A combo of the Google toolbar & the XP Service Pack 2 surfed me right
past the registration. I don't care for them either, but have never had a spam problem from a newspaper site. Always make sure you check the opt out on email notifications and you shouldn't see spam generated from most newspaper cookies.

14. Here's the explanation from Moore's site
snip>
The only problem with my desire to get this movie in front of as many Americans as possible is that, should it air on TV, I will NOT be eligible to submit "Fahrenheit 9/11" for Academy Award consideration for Best Documentary. Academy rules forbid the airing of a documentary on television within nine months of its theatrical release (fiction films do not have the same restriction).

Although I have no assurance from our home video distributor that they would allow a one-time television broadcast -- and the chances are they probably won't -- I have decided it is more important to take that risk and hope against hope that I can persuade someone to put it on TV, even if it's the night before the election.

Therefore, I have decided not to submit "Fahrenheit 9/11" for consideration for the Best Documentary Oscar. If there is even the remotest of chances that I can get this film seen by a few million more Americans before election day, then that is more important to me than winning another documentary Oscar. I have already won a Best Documentary statue. Having a second one would be nice, but not as nice as getting this country back in the hands of the majority.

18. F9/11 has already been broadcast on Cuban TV
The Academy would make allowances if Castro broadcast it without Moore's permission, though.

It's a tough call otherwise. I think Super Size Me could conceivably take the Best Documentary prize away from F9/11, it's a very well-done and well-organized effort, and it certainly had an effect on how McDonald's does business.

Having said that, though, I wish Michael Moore the best of luck. I'd love to see him walk away with a second Oscar, but going the Best Picture route makes it a slim chance.

It sounds as if everyone in the place saw it, too! They seemed to love it, according to remarks given to reporters.

28. Thanks for the link. It's good to give it a rating, as well.
"Its current average rating is 3.09 with 471 vote(s)" when I saw it.

H'ray for Michael Moore. Good luck to him.

7. I feel like I'm the only one around
who agreed with a lot of the points in the movie, wants * out of office (preferably in jail), but thought that as a film, documentary or otherwise, it sucked.

I had the same opinion of Bowling for Columbine--Moore makes some good points here and there, but the movies themselves suck. He goes along, gets sidetracked for a good portion of the movie, then gets back to his original point without really accomplishing anything.

12. I can't see either film getting nominated for best picture
I mean in general Mel Gibson's movie was not well reviewed - it just sold well because of all the xtians wanting to see a Jesus Slasher flick.

17. I just read another thread on du where Moore says
he's not going to go for the best doc category..

" I have decided not to submit "Fahrenheit 9/11" for consideration for the Best Documentary Oscar. If there is even the remotest of chances that I can get this film seen by a few million more Americans before election day, then that is more important to me than winning another documentary Oscar. I have already won a Best Documentary statue. Having a second one would be nice, but not as nice as getting this country back in the hands of the majority.

The deadline to submit the film for the documentary Oscar was last Wednesday. I told my crew who worked on the film, let's let someone else have that Oscar. We have already helped to ignite the biggest year ever for nonfiction films. Last week, 1 out of every 5 films playing in movie theaters across America was a documentary! That is simply unheard of. There have been so many great nonfiction films this year, why not step aside and share what we have with someone else? Remove the 800-pound gorilla from that Oscar category and let the five films who get nominated have all the attention they deserve (instead of the focus being on a film that has already had more than its share of attention)."

So it's all in how you read these news stories..in other words..don't believe everything you read.

I think Michael's main purpose..like ours is getting bush the hell out of Dodge!

23. Can anyone think of 5 other movies
out so far this year that are more deserving of a Best Picture Oscar?
I know the year's not over yet and the holidays will bring many of the big contenders, but I can't think of 5 movies - to date - that had more of an impact on me.

30. hmmm....I don't know if I can name any movies that have come out this year
I mean, wasn't there the one with the new girl who's going to be this year's 20 year old Julia Roberts who played the girl who wanted the guy? You know which one I'm talking about---the girl is a wallflower and the popular kids harass her or make fun of her but then she takes off her glasses and stops putting her hair in a ponytail and wears decent clothes and suddenly she's funny AND smart AND pretty and the cool cute guy that she had a crush on is blown off by her once she finds that yes, virginia, you are worth more if you're pretty and wear contacts. And then she dates the equally "pretty underneath the glasses" nerdy guy...you know that movie, right?

Or what about the one with the middle-ager's coming of life tale? You know---the one where stereotypical roles of middle-agers (crotchety and cranky and unable to 'get' these krazy kids theez daze) and the stereotypical roles of the Krazy Kidz who manage to fuck everything up only for Aging Witty Divorcee Mom and Soon-to-be-step-dad waltz in during the last 20 minutes of the flick, set everything straight and save the world, all the while struggling to stay in the best lighting position to hide their baggy throat jiggly skin and horrendous "40-year-2-pack-a-day" yellow teeth...you know that movie....

Or the tear-jerker with major hollywood stars who get paid far too much to play themselves for 2 hours. You know--the one with the tart who just waltzes through scenes without any emotion---you know---she's the one that got paid $029384092375098234 billion dollars to cameo in that jeans commercial....anyways...and the "I'm really 45 but still play the single 27 year old" male star who is a fuckup but ends up saving the day in the end by bringing his co-star flowers and saying something stupid like "you had me at hello", which of course, the masses will repeat and have emblazoned upon shirts, and eventually name their children "You Had Me At Hello Smith"....

Ooh! I know! The Major Hollywood Blockbuster Action Flick which started the new up-and-coming Male Action Star--you know---the one whose name we'll forget after his third straight-to-DVD smash? You know the movie I'm talking about---the guy has the great pecs and rescues the girl while driving really fast and outsmarting the bad guys?

Gosh! There's so many of them to choose from....hmm....... :snarky smile:
