`W stands for wrong,' Kerry says

RACINE, W.Va. - (KRT) - Seizing on a common campaign sign that features President Bush's middle initial, Sen. John Kerry on Monday declared that "W stands for wrong," shifting his focus from the rhetorical quagmires of Iraq and Vietnam to pocketbook issues.

Kerry spent Labor Day in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina blaming Bush for economic problems that he said were the worst since the Great Depression. He also retooled his campaign team on the fly.

"As the president likes to say, there's nothing complicated about it," Kerry said, speaking to a crowd of about 2,000 at a United Mine Workers Labor Day picnic. "It all comes down to one letter: W. W stands for wrong. Wrong choices, wrong judgment, wrong priorities for our country."

Aides said that Kerry is jettisoning the talk about his own Vietnam war record that dominated his message throughout the summer and will hit the economy hard, believing that job losses, falling wages and rising health care costs will convince millions of voters that they are worse off than they were four years ago.

By the way, I talked with my niece from South Carolina this afternoon. I love my family but they are all Republicans, so I never discuss politics.

Anyway, my niece had a job in a chain store that she has always liked very much. Today when I asked her how it was, she said that she hated it because of its corporate decision to move the employees from full to part time so that they don't have to pay insurance. I sympathized with her because so many retail (and other) jobs are like this.

I hope that she connects the dots on her own and votes against Bush.

Kerry's made a good but half-hearted start today. He's finally sounding like he's actually against the war in Iraq. Specifically, they should be using this "W=Wrong" association to directly attack the "strong leadership" meme of the Republican spin, by repeatedly emphasizing that all these virtues the Republicans assign to their man (that he's "decisive", "resolute", or "pious") only have meaning if the basic policies are CORRECT -- and that when you're decisively WRONG, resolutely WRONG, piously WRONG, etc. it just means you're making things even worse.

To twist a phrase of Goldwater's, resolve in the cause of a bad idea is no virtue.
