US military has intelligence breakthrough at Abu Ghraib prison
"BAGHDAD (AFP) - New interrogation techniques at the scandal-plagued Abu Ghraib prison are yielding three times as many intelligence tips as in January, when commanders allowed controversial methods that have been labeled as torture.

The new methods have increased "high value intelligence" reports from detainees from around 100 in January, when the Abu Ghraib scandal erupted, to 345 in August, the chief of detention operations in Iraq Major General Geoffrey Miller, told reporters Monday"

1. Watch the Bushies take credit for it...
"we have fine tuned our methods to improve the value of intelligence... this has been our strategery all along"

2. So if we'd been using these new techniques instead of
torture, we'd have had this intel months ago? How many deaths could we have avoided due to this incompetence?

4. You'd think with all that intelligence
they could have predicted 7 of our Marines dying today...

12. Suppose for a moment that the angry mob
who torched and dragged the four mercenaries in Fallujah were angry because Abu Ghraib wasn't being reported here even though it was common knowledge on the Iraq street (remember the timing?)
That resulted in the siege and the bombing of Fallujah which killed hundreds. Speculation, I know...but you're so right in wondering what might have been avoided by not torturing cab-drivers and petty criminals.

10. This is just Miller electioneering for Bush
The message is "we have seen the error of our ways and stopped sinning, so it is ok to vote for Bush with a clean conscience". More compassionate conservative nonsense that won't last past November.

11. Why are they touting this as a change?:
snip>
The interrogation teams at Abu Ghraib are now stocked with reservists who work in civilian law enforcement back home. Training for the teams was supervised until last month by a 30-year-veteran of the Chicago police homicide division.

Didn't Graner, Karpinski and one of the other charged torturers work in US prisons?

20. Maybe the pictures served their allegedly initial purpose:
to frighten prisoners into talking. "Better tell us about your RPGs, or we'll sick some creep with a moustache on your rectal area."

More likely, they're just lying and attempting to distract from the coming Seymour Hersh onslaught.

they never do this sort of thing unless they're hoping to distract from SOME REALLY BAD PRESS™ coming down the pike, or having just come down the pike
