LONDON (AP)A 21-year-old British soldier was arrested Tuesday in connection with the murder of a civilian in Iraq, London's Metropolitan Police said.
Police said the soldier, who was not identified, was taken into custody at a London police station. A Ministry of Defense spokesman declined to discuss the arrest.
Police said the arrest related to the death of Hassan Said, who was killed in Ad Dayr, near Basra in southern Iraq, on Aug. 3, 2003. The force said police had been asked to investigate the death by Britain's Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith.
The British government has previously expressed regret and sympathy for the deaths of Iraqi civilians. But it is fighting a lawsuit by the families of six Iraqis allegedly slain by British troops, who have gone to the High Court in London seeking to force an independent investigation. ..
