(Challenger) Survey: Surge in layoffs, hiring
http://money.cnn.com/2004/09/07/news/economy/jobless_challenger/?cnn=yes

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Employers increased both hiring and layoff plans in August, according to a survey released Tuesday by an outplacement firm.

The survey by Challenger, Gray and Christmas found employers announced plans to cut 74,150 jobs in the upcoming months. That's up 6.6 percent from July's announced layoffs, and is the second highest monthly total since February.

Employers also announced plans to hire 132,105 in the weeks and months ahead. But John Challenger, president of the firm, said most of those new jobs are likely seasonal and temporary. The survey said 83,450 of the new hiring plans announced came from retailers.

"These expectations probably include the typical hiring surge that coincides with the coming of the holiday selling season," he said in a statement Tuesday. "While all hiring is good for the economy, it must be noted that many of the retail jobs added over the next few months may disappear by February."

2. Mark this under: Things that will never make sense
Firing people so you can turn around and hire more in a few weeks. Huh?

But, most likely, what is actually happening is a group of companies, "A", are firing people and a group of companies, "B", are hiring people to stock shelves and drive trucks around.

gripe on
Of course, I come to expect this kind of muddled reporting and intense stupidity from CNN. Hell, I've been steadly losing confidence in CNN since the Richard Jewel - Olympic Park bombing thing. And the endless coverage of the OJ trial. Boy that sucked!
gripe off

3. Y'know, Bush & the Reeps could have fixed this EASILY for the election by
just HIRING people to get the stats up. They are SOOOOO stingy that it obviously hasn't occurred to them to just rig the hiring market for 4 months and VOILA! problem solved. Then lay 'em off on 11/3. But NOOOOOO!!! Too shortsighted to do the obvious.

I've been waiting to make this comment for months but now that it's too late for 'em to do it, there it is. They're not as smart as they think they are...

4. No they aren't that smart
If they were, they wouldn't trot out the same, tired, old policies and "ideas" that were crap under Reagan.

But "stingy" is a good word to use. Sums them up completely. Basically the rich are rich because they don't spend their money. Who also are, the biggest drains on the economy. We made the stupid transition to a consumer based economy that needs circulation of cash to stay a float.

Now, what sense does it make to have the majority of all cash in the US held by a fraction of the population. And have that vast majority of money NOT circulating around?

And therein lies the stupidity of the "fiscally responsible" Republican.

5. JOB churning is a 'hidden' issue for this campaign
that no one speaks of...

Companies now make it regular policy to layoff highly-paid longterm employees, because more than adequate replacements can be hired at a fraction of the salary...

Companies should be rewarded for keeping 'good' employees and paying them good wages.
