Nader won't be on Virginia ballot
RICHMOND, Va (AP)

Ralph Nader has been denied a spot on Virginia's presidential ballot, the State Board of Elections said Tuesday.

The independent candidate fell short of getting the required 10,000 certified signatures on his qualifying petitions, said Jean Jensen, secretary of the Board of Elections. The board was to meet Tuesday. ..

9. Some recent state polls (pre-convention)
showed Virginia as "barely-Bush." I had trouble believing those polls and in view of the recent shrub bounce it's hard to believe it hasn't widened a bit but Virginia polls were closer than the Bush/Gore final numbers.

LOL!
I read that if Arlington goes heavily for Kerry, he can win the state. Think this is based on what happened with Mark Warner...

22. Warner is very popular
Really took the Republicans out to lunch last session. We are one of the few states that has managed to remain solvent over the last 3 years or so.

Arlington is Dem territory. If turnout there is high, Kerry has a chance. He still will need to pull better than most Democrats in Republican areas of the state. Warner can help him here as he did quite well down there.

I'd still have to say it is unlikely Kerry can actually take Virginia, but this is the closest I've ever seen it at this point.

8. Ah Ralph, wasn't your whole reason for running this time
was that you were going to build some kind of progressive movement? Well, I got news for you pal, the only hing you're building is a mound of bullshit. Any sane human being would have dropped out long ago, but it's quite obvious that you've gone insane. Your sole reason for existing is to hurt the Democrats because you have some personal grudge against them. Get over yourself you big ass crybaby!

10. This pretty much makes Virginia an official battleground state.
Nader was the only thing keeping Virginia out of reach for Kerry. Now Bush is going to have to shore up his support there, spending valuable time, money, and resources.

This is good.

I speak in jest, but I don't doubt they'd like to try.

14. Maybe if Jim Gilmore or George Allen
were still Governor they would try something underhanded.

The Republican Attorney General had to step in to get the Election Board to reconsider Ralph. They had already turned his petition down once.

13. Anyone know how many states
Nader has been denied in? Maybe if it's more than half the states, he might decide not to embarass himself any further.

23. Actually
an article received as an e-mail today noted that Nader has only received $54k from RP types, while receiving $66k from DP types. interesting. Article went on to say that if RP was actually funding and working for Nader, he would be on all 50 ballots. Perhaps a telling point.

15. working hard....we will KERRY Virginia....and I'll tell you why....

many many Virginians have been working hard for Kerry since January....in mid-July, we held ONE event in Crystal City Virginia and raised $ 1.7 MILLION....Kerry was there, and so was Governor Warner...

we now have TWO major Kerry Offices in Virginia....all put together by VOLUNTEERS...one on Lee's Highway near Fairfax, and another in Richmond....

at our recent office OPENING in Nothern Virginia, we were expecting about 100 people, yet 800 PEOPLE SHOWED UP...we have now rolled up our sleeves, pulled together all the different Democratic Groups in Virginia and are MOVING FORWARD....our Democratic Governor, Democratic Mayors, Democratic Congressional Representatives, have all layed the foundation.....we have DEMOCRATS on the ticket for every single Congressional District....we WILL send more Democrats to OUR State Legislate than ever before...GO VIRGINIA !!!

YOU can volunteer at Kerry headquarters every night until 8:30 PM....in addition, you may have noticed all the hundreds of HOUSE PARTIES, MEMORIAL DAY PARTIES, Parties in the Park, and even "republicans for Kerry" events at actual TOWN HALLS in rural Virginia....you couldn't miss it if you got your eyes open....

people in Virginia are ready to BOOT BUSH out...

come help us KERRY VIRGINIA to Victory....we need YOUR help...

19. I have mixed feeling about this.
First of all, Virginia WILL go to Bush. That's not defeatism, it's reality. I wish the resources had gone to keep Nader off a swing state's ballot, where it might actually do some good.

I don't feel comfortable about keeping people off the ballot. If it's necessary, OK, do it in places where it's actually going to count, and we're going to get something positive out of it to counter the bad press.
