Former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz became the most prominent Republican to endorse a California ballot measure that would fund human embryonic stem cell research in the state.
Shultz and U.S. Rep. Doug Ose, a moderate Californian who is retiring this year after three terms in Congress, are the only national Republican figures to endorse Proposition 71 on the Nov. 2 ballot.
"Beyond its potential to generate lifesaving cures and treatments for some of our most debilitating diseases, Prop. 71 includes key fiscal and governance provisions that will protect California's budget and ensure that the funds are administered in a careful and responsible way," Shultz said in a prepared statement distributed by the Yes on 71 campaign.
Shultz is currently a fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
