White House Won't Echo Cheney Warning
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The White House declined Wednesday to echo Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s warning that the United States risks another terrorist attack if voters make "the wrong choice" on Election Day.

The assertion by Cheney, which Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) derided as "scare tactics" aimed at bolstering the Republican ticket, was not repeated by White House spokesman Scott McClellan during a meeting with reporters aboard Air Force One as the president flew to Florida.

"There are differences in how the two candidates approach the war on terror," McClellan said. "That's what the vice president was talking about in his remarks."

During a campaign appearance Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa, Cheney suggested Kerry would follow a pre-Sept. 11 policy of reacting defensively if an attack were to occur during a Kerry administration.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States," Cheney
told supporters at a town-hall meeting.

4. I saw Tim Russert
this morning say, "What would Cheney say if we have an attack before the election...would he say they are to blame?" I think that is the best comeback I've heard all day. Why don't Kerry's spokespeople say that?? And why doesn't someone say why didn't Bush pay attention before 9/11 to the warnings? And read the PDB??

15. Because responding to outrageous irresponsible objective
remarks like Cheney/Bush should not be countered with irresponsible, outrageous remarks. It's correct to ask Cheney what exactly does HE mean by that remark? Is he saying that if you don't vote for Cheney/Bush then if a terrorist attack occurs, Americans are responsible? Then should we turn the war on ourselves? For that remark to be made by a man in Cheney's position, it should be time that Congress and the Senate put DEMAND a formal apology from Cheney/Bush! It is inexcusable.

7. I agree, this was a threat.
How can our government and the media just shuck and jive when the sitting vice-president makes a bold-faced treat to this country? He should be interrogated by the FBI as to just what kind of action he plans on taking against the United States of America if the electorate chooses Kerry over Bush.

11. Is Cheney saying to vote for Kerry?
Cheney says iff we don't vote for Bush, then terrorists will attack the U.S.

Yet BushCo® says that under no circumstances should we give in to terrorists threats.

Is Cheney telling us to vote for Kerry?

18. Cheney needs to back up this claim with facts
It would appear that cheney knows something and isn't telling. Otherwise why would he make such a crazy statement? This is serious shit.

21. VERY excellent point! Kerry should request a back up of those remarks.
This is why I love DU, there's always intelligent observations and points! I can't imagine how boring freeperville would be, to have such limited thought processes, to want to beat people up all the time, what a sad way to exist. I almost feel sorry for them...BAHAAAAAAA

20. "The Vice-President's statement shouldn't be viewed as official."
I made this quote up, of course, but honestly, it wouldn't surprise me one little bit for Deer Scott or one of the other OvalHos to say just that.

22. Remember when Cheney said that he had info no one else had in
regard to the 9/11 Commission? They called him on it and they found out he was just blowing smoke out of his ass. So I agree, someone needs to call the geriatric douchebag on this too. Let him tell us what he knows or forever shut the hell up.

23. The statement was amended...
several hours later by a Female Spokesperson for Cheney. I heard that on Olberman. It was real lame. Something like, No mater who is elected there will most likely be another terrorist attack. It made no sense. They tried to clean his first threat up but succeeded in making the issue a farce. Seems what he meant was that if America voted Kerry in that there would be a greater chance of another terrorist attack. The blood must not be getting to Cheney's brain in sufficient quantity.
