Polish city of Krakow to name square after Ronald Reagan
Polish city of Krakow to name square after Ronald Reagan

Wednesday, September 8, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(09-08) 11:24 PDT WARSAW, Poland (AP) --

The southern Polish city of Krakow decided Wednesday to name a square after former President Ronald Reagan in recognition of his role in ending communist rule.

Krakow councilors voted 19-17 to give the name "Ronald Reagan Square" to the main square in Nowa Huta, a communist-era development built around a major steel plant. Currently called Central Square, it was the scene of numerous protests by workers in communist times.

Reagan, who died at age 93 on June 5, is fondly remembered in Poland for his support of the anti-communist Solidarity movement during the period of martial law, imposed by Poland's communist authorities in 1981.

After the fall of communism, Krakow made him an honorary resident in recognition of the part he played in the system's collapse.

1. Ronald Reagan Legacy Project:
http://www.reaganlegacy.org/main.htm

"The Ronald Reagan Legacy Project's mission is to honor and memorialize the historic achievements of President Ronald Reagan. It aims to do so by naming at least one notable public landmark in each state and all 3067 counties after the 40th president.

In recognition of President Reagan's leadership role in the defeat of communism, the Project also seeks to honor his memory in formerly communist countries."

3. Ok does that mean we don't need to name anything in my county for RR?

4. I'm all for naming federal prisons after him
The Ronald Reagan Correctional Facility for the Ethically Challenged.

Shouldn't the polish name something after Steve Van Zandt for supporting Solidarity?

8. Yeah, he supported "solidarity" in Poland while he busted unions in US
The vote was not unanimous, though. I guess they will name Baghdad Bush City.

9. Having lived in Krakow I can say that it doesn't surprise me AND
that by doing that the they managed to piss off at least 50% of the city's population. One half (Give or take 30%...) is rabidly conservative, anti-abortion, Catholic, borderline Fascist, the other half (Give or take 10%...) is still very Left leaning, Humanist, pro-Civil Rights, pro-Healthcare and pluralistic.

Oh well, I liked that square, still do; I suppose if I ever get a chance to go back I'll have some work to do;-)

10. Poland is one of only 3 countries in the global poll...
that chose Bush over Kerry, 31% to 26%. They are joined by the Philippines and Nigeria.

India and Thailand had ties and the other THIRTY countries went for Kerry.
