NRA plans anti-Kerry ad buy in Wisconsin
WASHINGTON(AP)

The National Rifle Association will run infomercials on Milwaukee television stations attacking Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's record on guns, as part of $400,000 ad buy in several battleground states.

The infomercial features voters from Kerry's home state of Massachusetts calling Kerry's stated commitment to gun rights insincere. ..

Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's executive vice president, said that gun voters can make a difference in several of the closely-contested states.

"That's why you cannot pick up a newspaper in Wisconsin without seeing John Kerry with a shotgun," LaPierre said.

20. These are the people who supported Reagan's "law and order" yet
they are supporting actions to make it easier to kill policeman in the line of duty. I can't believe how evil politics is. If Congress lets this laps the blood be on their hands. Bet anything that the next "terrorist attack" will come from some combination of assault weapons and homemade bombs.

3. I don't think the Milwaukee market is going to help them with this
Appleton or Green Bay, maybe. But Milwaukee has more trouble with guns than love for them, in my experience.

They don't wear Cheese hats for nothing.

"Gore will take away our guns" was a chant four years ago. I frequented a Metal fabricating business and they had a photo-cropped picture of Gore looking down the barrel of a gun with a caption "Do you trust this man with your Rights"

They are paranoid white guys out there that think gun control is about ridding the world of hunting. Yeah right we need more deer!

7. It's not the cheese hats that worry me.
It's the guys who wear blaze orange ALL THE TIME.

I wish the Democratic Party could figure out a way to appease rational, law-abiding hunters. These guys are harmless. The problem is that the NRA convinces them that when the government wants to ban a dual over/under shotgun grenade launcher combo with fingerprint retardant grips, that they'll take away their .22s. Which is completely insane.

10. Yep, hence you have Sportsmen for Bush. There actually are gun
enthusiast against Bush, but they tend to be more libertarian and are against him for the Patriot Act. They understand that their right to bear arms means nothing in the face of the Patriot Act.
Sportsmen for Bush just don't get that part. Didn't Bush promise in the 2000 campaign to keep the AR bill from lapsing? I read somewhere that his admin wants the bill renewed, behind the scenes of coure. Came across that while researching Sportsmen for (and against) Bush. Friend of mine had them damn "for" bumper stickers all over his truck. :eyes:

12. It'd be simple to do.
All we as a party would have to do is stop pushing gun control, and stop giving photo ops like this one:

If Kerry loses the election, it will be because of this picture.

There's nothing wrong with that photo-op.....unless you're a right wing asswipe deliberately lying about Democratic positions....

But then who do we know like that around here?

16. There sure as shit IS something wrong with that photo op....
if you're trying to portray yourself as being pro-gun.

Anti-gun extremists have done more damage to the Democratic party than ANY other group I can think of.

Gun control is generally popular in the Northeast and California. Everywhere else in the country, it's a political third rail.

that deserved to be defeated....

"Anti-gun extremists have done more damage to the Democratic party than ANY other group I can think of."
Go peddle that to somebody who gives a roaring shit, refill. The only people pissing and moaning in public life about that gun rights crap are right wing pieces of shit who hate blacks, Jews, gays and uppity women as much as they love them guns. That's why only the Zell Miller wing of the party is for gun rights...and 80% of the country wants gun control.

19. Tell that...
"That's why only the Zell Miller wing of the party is for gun rights..."

to the blue-collar union guys who are pro-gun. They used to be one of our core constituencies.

"and 80% of the country wants gun control."

Yup, that's why 38 states have gone to "shall issue" CCW licensing.

I suppose I should be grateful that this time out you didn't say I personally am a "right wing piece(s) of shit who hate blacks, Jews, gays and uppity women as much as they love them guns." I suppose that's an improvement of sorts.

Something like 25% of Americans own a gun. The percentage of Americans that own a gun and are eligible to vote is higher. That's a lot of voters to piss off.

21. I'll tell that to anybody who wants to hear.....
and I'll laugh out loud at you trying to pretend that a right wing lobbying group with Grover Norquist and Ted Nugent on their board (like the NRA does) wouldn't be buying this ad if not for that photo op.

"the blue-collar union guys who are pro-gun. They used to be one of our core constituencies."
Gee, they still are....but so few I know think this right wing horseshit is anything but right wing horseshit. And most of them know the fuckwits that the NRA pimps for are anti-union and anti worker rights.

"Something like 25% of Americans own a gun."
And how many of them piss and moan about this bogus gun rights crap and belong to the Nuts Ruining America? Answer: Next to none.

24. well, MrBench....
if I was the kind of person to hang out on gun forums, I would. I'm not.

Frankly, arguing the "which is better: 9mm or .45?" isn't something I'd enjoy reading about.

"as well as one of those who lives to smear Democratic politicans and public figures and cheerlead for dimwitted right wing morons and their idiotic legislative priorities."

Why, Bench, I do believe that's a personal attack.

27. About That Picture.......

I don't believe for one moment that that picture is going to cost Kerry the election. That's just more radical, gun-centric bullshit like we see down in the Gun Dungeon with unfortunate regularity.

But let's just suppose you're right: that picture is what the election hangs on. What are you doing, flashing it in this forum with your standard Democrats-are-doomed message, where thousands of friends and foes have access to it? How many more times between now and election day are you going to exhibit it here in DU---or elsewhere---with the same dour words?

Come to think of it, what are the chances of your voting for John Kerry in November? Hell, what are the chances of your posting something in DU that doesn't register your utter dislike of the Democratic candidate for president? Extra credit for honest answers....

29. How about this photo, taken within seconds of the other one?
Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 08:30 PM by DoNotRefill

Hit properties, and you'll see where that photo came from. I suppose she's against Kerry too, eh?

The chances of my voting for Kerry in November are excellent. I'll be holding my nose when I do it, but I'm planning on doing it anyway. Why? Because Kerry is for a woman's right to reproductive freedom, and Bush is rabidly against it. Go back and search my posts on the abortion issue. You'll see that I'm easily as serious about that as I am about the Second Amendment.

For me, at least, my plans to vote for Kerry aren't because Kerry is Kerry, it's because Bush is Bush.

Gun control is an important issue for me. It isn't the ONLY issue for me, however. But for a lot of people, it IS the only issue. I wish Kerry hadn't pissed so many of them off.

18. I guess they only care about the right to bear arms
But they are okay with Bush and co.'s dismantling of the other 9 amendments in the Bill of Rights? Kerry is a pretty avide hunter and outdoorsman (I don't know about Gore) so that picture wouldn't work against Kerry. Although some winguts will believe anything.

How can the NRA question Kerry's record on guns when he is so clearly pro-gun? Obviously this will all be lies from the corrupt gun lobby.

14. If Milwaukee is their only buy, it's a waste of money.
They need to put these ads outstate to do any good. But there are plenty of hunting associations already parroting this around so it probably would still be a waste of money.

30. it's THE issue in outstate Minnesota
half of my family is on the fence, they hate Bush but fear Kerry will "take their guns". For people Up North, it's important enough to push fence sitters into Dumya's camp. Today I saw four trucks with "Sportsman For Bush" bumper stickers, they are gaining ground here. We need to address this soon.
