Police: Heckler at Kerry speech says he was assaulted
CINCINNATI (AP)

A heckler briefly interrupted a speech by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry today in Cincinnati. The man _ 48-year-old Michael Russell of Foster, Kentucky _ told police he was assaulted by two men near him in the crowd before others shouted him down with cries of "Kerry, Kerry."

Cincinnati police said Russell complained that his neck was hurt by a man who put him in a headlock. The scuffle occurred after Russell started to yell about Kerry's allegation of war atrocities after returning from Navy service in Vietnam. ..

Russell said he is a Republican who ran unsuccessfully four years ago for judge- executive of Bracken County, Kentucky. He said he worked for the Bush-Cheney campaign that year by putting out campaign signs.

24. Exactly!
I watched about 1/3 of the CSPAN footage... that's all I could stand of Andy Card preaching to the Nazi youth. If you want to see it, go to CSPAN and use the search term "Republican Youth." When they are all wearing uniforms, that will mean we are past the point of no return.

10. What did he expect? Flowers?
I heard that he was sitting in an area reserved for Veterans. If you insult Kerry on his Vietnam service, you'll insult all of them. Those Veterans supporting Kerry already have had enough with all those SlimeVets and their lies.

14. I really don't get it
I don't know if the guy was really assaulted.
But we tend to scream bloody murder if one of ours gets 'roughed up'.
I don't think he was, but what IF the guy was actually assaulted?
What would we say then?

19. The right wing will go all out to get this in the media - our side doesn't
If the power of the Democratic Party got behind every Democratic protestor who was attacked by right wingers, it would be a news story too. Instead, we let it go and hope the media will do something about it.

The right wing doesn't "hope" for anything - they make it happen.

We need to be much more aggressive with the media. When a Democrat is attacked at any right wing event, we need to make it an issue. The right wing goes all out to make issues, we need to do the same.

25. Isn't this the kind of thing protestwarrior does?
These people know the media will play up stories like these. It's clear he was heckling and, in fact, was there specifically to heckle. And, probably, to try to goad others into attacking him. Then he can play the poor republican victim on Fox, Limbaugh, Hannity, and the rest.

Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 04:36 PM by enki23
cringing and crying about being roughed up a little at a democratic party event... i say, go buddy go. *this* is one attack angle that truly, truly ain't gonna work.

we should encourage (or goad) this schmuck to do just that.

We were cheering for the folks who disrupted the RNC with their banners.

47. I watched it on TV when it happened
and thought it was handled pretty well. He started heckling, then suddenly was surrounded by a bunch of other guys, and then he shut up. I think his plan was to yell and run, but when he was confronted by people who came to hear Kerry speak, he wimped out.
